The Magnus Archives Animatic | ep.187 'Checking Out'

Hi all!
I had to do a found sound animatic for my storyboard class, so I decided to re-visit an episode of TMA I've always wanted to animate.

I am about half way done with a CR animation i've been working on for a LONG time. mostly on and off, but I'm done with the hardest parts

My theory - When Jon said "Hellen, was that a lie?" he was in fact bluffing. But it was enough to make Helen scared, when he talks about this strand, this thread, this genuine untruth, he is just embellishing it to sell her on it. Once she feels fear, that's it, the eye can feel that fear and lock itself on.

Likewise, when Gertrude gave Michael the "impossible map" to lead to the center of the spiral...she too was lying. She couldn't map the place from never having been inside, but Michael trusted her SO much, that when she lied and said she had a map, he believed it.

After all, what's the spiral to do in response to a lie? Tell the truth? that's against its nature. If he thinks the map works, to prove it wrong would be to reveal to it truth....both Gertrude and Jon trap the spiral into a position where it can either lie and destroy itself, or be honest and live.

I haven’t listened to this episode yet but I can’t stop fucking laughing at the fact that Helen just casually turns the entire dimension around every time Jon tries to smite her- it’s like going on a carnival ride

Ooo, the background as Helen's hallways starting disappearing was so gorgeous. And the imagery of the lie as the thread was so pretty!! Lovely animatic this was so cool :D

This is so good. The weaving, the hallway twisting, Jons hair, the way it is staged and framed.

This is my favourite part of the Magnus Archives. The way how we’ve known the character of distortion Helen, and how from one simple lie, Jon unravels its very being.

Wow, this is… _wow._
The characters’ designs are pretty much exactly how I imagine them; the attention to detail was astounding; the expressions were fluid and on point.

what the FUCK this is so good !!! Kind of random but i really like how you portrayed Helen's domain shifting and how the Archivist falls through the confusing space. You really nailed the vibes and architecture (or lack thereof) of Helen's corridors. I also love the expressions you gave the characters, they are very well done

I love your designs of Jon and Helen, they are so good!! And all the movements are amazing, I always had trouble imagining the twisting corridors, but Jon falling through the door and Helen shifting the hallways around looked so great <3
