The rotten tomatoes discrepancy between critics and audience says it all.

This type of reaction is the exact reason there’s a monumental divide in America. Ironic, that those who preach “empathy” the loudest display inability to exhibit it with those they despise.

IT IS A SINGLE POINT PERSPECTIVE MOVIE. its only from J.Ds perspective. You cant tell why Amy Adams started using it or any reason behind it. If you just watched it as a story from the boys eyes This is a really good movie.

I am from Southeast Kentucky and this movie accurately describes my childhood. It’s a very good representation.

I didn’t think this was bad, this was focused on someone pulling out of poverty

I saw the movie and I thought the movie depicted issues within families. I know families that dealt with issues of abuse with drugs etc. So I don’t understand how people can be upset about someone else’s story.

There aren't many minorities in rural Appalachia; especially at that time, so it makes complete sense why they weren't as prevalent in the film. Also, if people of color weren't in his world at the time, how can you force someone to add fictitious characters for the sake of skin color. This was a biographical account of J.D. Vance's life. Also, there were some minorities in the film but it's understandable why they didn't have lead roles.

Why is JD Vance a bad person for showing HIS side of HIS own story? Jesus. You were too harsh on this review, I don't know how to feel about this.

Don’t speak on things you haven’t properly researched and analyzed, Grace.

If grace hates it, then it must be good, I'm gonna watch it

Perhaps JD Vance is telling a personal truth. To him, where he came from was a hell and the characters will be horrible. You can't sugar coat someone's bio!

I loved this movie, it represents poverty, addiction, emotional and physical abuse, generational abuse, and underlying mental illness. That said, I wish I could’ve seen more scenes with Amy Adams, but Glenn Close was brilliant.

Funny thing is I thought this movie was really good, heartbreaking in the sense of emotional roller coasters go but a great movie. For those of us who have been in those situations before and relate to or feel that pain this was a true representation of that world. For those who had nothing good to say about this movie, everyone is entitled to their opinion but all I can say is LUCKY YOU to never have had to deal with that type of pain and hardship because its not easily forgotten. Its no fairy tale but I'd say its a reality for plenty of people whove had to endure and overcome or at least come to terms with. I'd recommend this movie definitely.

this review was not helpful at all. It feels like an out of touch opinion based on your own personal issues.

This is based on a true story, all those things actually happened. The women were represented as they were. You didn't even read the book! Thanks for listing all your credentials as a bonafide critic, now I know my resolve to take not any of you 'experts' seriously is justified. 🙄

Don’t talk about this movie being disrespectful to the military, I thought it was a great movie showing what life is like in areas that you’re obviously not from

Oh, no! I really liked this movie and the characters. I was an active duty service member and we must be careful when fantasizing the way in which military members behave and cary themselves vs the reality of a real service member. From my experience, most come from similar circumstances and even with the best intentions many are dealing with baggage that make many the "not so perfect" soldier. This movie was a REAL depiction of what you could experience with a poor, less than perfect family with emotional baggage. The harshness of their environment IS the very reason for the "not so likable" attitudes of the characters.
