This is my SPOILER FREE Review of the brand new Netflix film, Hillbilly Elegy, coming November 24.
J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine from southern Ohio and current Yale Law student, is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he’s tried to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction. Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. comes to embrace his family’s indelible imprint on his own personal journey.

Based on J.D. Vance’s #1 New York Times Bestseller, directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard and produced by Academy Award winner Brian Grazer, HILLBILLY ELEGY is a powerful personal memoir that offers a window into one family’s personal journey of survival and triumph. By following three colorful generations through their unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience.

Thanks for watching!
Will this film receive any Oscar noms?
Did you all read the book?

I read this book as a college freshman. My roommate was a drug dealer, my mom had cancer, and I was 10 points away from failing college. I finished the book, and then decided not to drop out. You could say it changed my life

The book was about triumph over adversity and the movie faithfully followed the book. I thought it was great.

Growing up in a Midwestern family that came from Kentucky I thought it was pretty good. Hard to capture a story of this magnitude in a film.

Apparently this movie isn’t “woke” enough for critics.. I come from south Ga with similarities to his upbringing. This movie hit home for me and was worth every minute.

I really enjoyed it! Since I'm in the mental health field, it really hit the nail on addiction, mental health disorder and how it takes one person to really steer the wheel. It kept me entertained the whole time 👍🏽

My family grew up in the hills of Tennessee and my mom was pregnant young and escaped to NJ, then CA. So much of this hit hard of my life growing up. The bad reviews are insanely unfair. This does have simple mental health issues and addiction issues in it. I enjoyed it. It wasn't overly preachy or political.

You couldn’t be more wrong about this movie, Close and Howard deserves an Oscar

It was a good film but could have been better - I don't see the film itself being nominated. However Amy Adams and Glenn
Close may get nominated for their acting, I can see that.

I want to remind everyone that 'A Beautiful Mind' is leaving Hulu in December.

That's a great Ron Howard movie.

To piggy back off westentrance. I think this movie shines light not only the drug problem in Middletown and the surrounding areas, but his reason to succeed was greater than him and he wasn't going to allow anyone to stop him. People should be watching this movie feeling inspired even more so if they're from Middletown. There's nothing offensive about this movie... its real. It's about JDs childhood not Appalachian people.

Just finished watching this twice and it really was EXCELLENT! Glen Close always my favorite actress!!! I did not know it was a true story and at the end, I just cried because of what JD went through along with the whole family! I HIGHLY recommend this movie, it will pull at your heartstrings. I do not know why the reviews weren't better?!

Just saw this movie. I couldn't disagree more. I'm not sure what's making people judge this movie harshly, but it isn't warranted. I thought it was great. 8.5/10 for me.

It was good. The true definition of a 7.0 to 7.5/10 movie.

The trailer didn't get me hyped at all. Looks sentimental to a fault. Like it's trying too hard to get emotion out of you.

Well, perhaps the reason that the movie didn't relate to your Appalachian Roots was that it took place in the
mid-west. Regardless, it realistically projected what life could very well have been in their circumstances.
I'm not sure what more you could accommodate within the movie and still keep a narrative to the movie.
