J. D. Vance - Hillbilly Elegy - Book Review

J.D. Vance grew up in the hills of Kentucky, surrounded by the people often labeled as rednecks, hillbillies, or white trash.

In this deeply moving memoir, Vance shares the story of his family's struggles and America’s issue with generational neglect. He recounts his mother's battles with the legacies of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma, and how she never fully escaped them. Vance also highlights his grandparents, who, despite being dirt poor, were deeply in love and sacrificed everything for their children to pursue the American dream. Defying the odds, Vance went on to graduate from Yale Law School.

Hillbilly Elegy is not just a personal account but a commentary on how America has abandoned and condescended to its white working class, pushing them to a breaking point.
