J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine from southern Ohio and current Yale Law student, is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he’s tried to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction. Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. comes to embrace his family’s indelible imprint on his own personal journey.

Based on J.D. Vance’s #1 New York Times Bestseller and directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard, HILLBILLY ELEGY is a powerful personal memoir that offers a window into one family’s personal journey of survival and triumph. By following three colorful generations through their unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience.

I'm Black, grew up in the hood, and this is relatable AF. Love my mom, but her alcoholism literally pushed her to dementia at just 52 years old. I joined the Marines in 1997 literally just to be out of my hometown. And I think it's easy to take either the good OR the bad of your upbringing and allow it to define you. There comes a point in time when you have to be honest about all of it...this movie looks like it'll do a great job of that. Can't wait.

I'm a city girl from a well-to-do part of Chicago, but I have been living in Appalachia for the past 3 years working as a therapist for abused children. I read the book Hillbilly Elegy last year. Here's my take: This book/movie is spot on and it's so sad. The drugs, the poverty, the unemployment, the lack of education, the junk scattered on the front lawns.. it's all true. The complacency is what's most baffling to me. High schoolers drop out of high school at alarming rates, pass that norm on to their children, draw checks their entire life despite being able-bodied. You wouldn't believe the amount of young people who are on disability around here. People around here move all the time, "staying" with friends and family without having a place to call their home. Because people are constantly "staying" places, children share beds and couches with uncles and various boyfriends of the mother. Sexual abuse to these children occurs due to lack of boundaries, and the kids grow up and become abusers themselves. The cycle continues. Unfortunately, there are few role models or programs to help stop the cycle. Those who have beat the odds and have done well in school move out of the area because of lack of jobs. Those who are left are the uneducated and unskilled who pass that along to their children. There are many from Appalachia who are upset at this movie, claiming it doesn't depict real Appalachian culture but rather paints it to be so negative. But like I said, it's spot on from what I've observed in my community and the families I serve as a therapist. So I wonder.. what's the truth? Am I wrong in what I'm observing since I lack the roots of being raised here? Or are they wrong because they are blind to their own faults and demise?

I'm black and I attended college in Appalachia (Athens, Ohio) and spent a lot of time in Southeastern Ohio, eastern West Virginia, Western VA and Eastern TN-all in the heart of Appalachia. The movie was excellent and very reflective of what I saw and the people I met along the way in those areas. It was the first time I saw real American poverty. It was startling, to be honest. City poverty is very different from rural poverty.

This literally gave me chills. My wife bailed on our two kids and I almost 10yrs ago. Hasn't been around since. The behavior of Amy Adams character is a mirror image of the way my wife behaved. She bumped into my daughter recently at the local grocery store. I asked my daughter what it was it was like and she told me it was like bumping into an old friend from high-school and the conversation was, "hey, whatcha been up to?", "nice to see you" and thats it. Except, this is a mother we're talking about. It's not because they're bad people. It's a sickness. Some people are simply incapable of putting things of importance ahead of things that aren't.

This movie is evidence that the audience score is better than the critics

Someone finally made a film about hillbillies that depicts their struggles and not just the end result. Hopefully it opens people’s minds about not judging an entire populace.

This movie was brilliant, sad but brilliant, the acting was phenomenal, Glenn close and Amy Adams are amazing. The story is absolutely heartbreaking, I teared up a lot throughout this movie, because it was so real, this is the sad and harsh reality for many many people. Worth the watch!

I'm black, and this is too close to reality. Too sad, because this is practically the reality of the broken family. Every family needs both a father and mother; and the government keeps creating incentives to destroy the family.

The two actors playing the son as a teenager and then as an adult really look like they could be the same person.

The critics hate this movie because JD Vance is a conservative politician.

I live in Middletown, and this movie captures the dark parts of Midwestern culture very well.

Edit: GO VANCE! MUCH LOVE FROM MIDDLETOWN!!!

Healing doesn't mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives.

Totally disregard the critics on this one. This film is MUCH better than 99% of the tired retreads the industry keeps pumping out.

I learned of this movie just now after learning Vance is announced Trump's VP running mate. Anyone else? Believe it or not, this movie reveals alot of similarity between struggling lower class Whites with lower class Blacks in our American communities. An, subtle, but interesting message that should unite us all. I will certainly watch this movie tonight.
