Jd Vance bucked the psychology of allowing your past to define you. Some aren't so fortunate

I want to respond to your comment about how the outbursts seemed melodramatic and seemed to come out of nowhere. If you grow up in a household with addiction, this is often how it goes. It's not melodrama; it's real life. A simple family meal or holiday celebration is happening...and then something like a puppy peeing on a rug causes the addict to fly off the handle and start screaming, throwing things and hitting people. It might look like melodrama to some people, but it is daily life in a household with an addict.

I wish I had seen this movie with my dad, who passed at age 58, you don't imagine how much I cried seeing Hillbilly Elegy and regarding Amy Adams, her performance blew my mind, how talented she is as actress. About Glenn Close's performance, she got me speechless, so I have nothing to say about it.

I grew up in the Ozarks and joined the Army right after college graduation. I cannot tell you how many ppl I know in the Army who have a similar story. I loved the movie - and the book even more.

This movie is the closest thing to my actual childhood that I’ve ever seen on film. I’m not a Appalachian. I’m a Mexican American from Southern California.

I could not believe that it was Glen Close, she totally disappeared in her role.

The dark dampening that you feel throughout the movie is authentic! This family is in every small town (or any size town) when it comes to addiction and how it affects children. The reason this story is fantastic is that most don’t rise up out of addiction circumstances.

Absolutely loved the movie. All you need to do is look at all the four and five star reviews on Google. I really don't understand why movie critics don't like it? My favorite movie by far for 2020.
Cheers 🍺

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I read the memoir when it was first published. The book was powerful and depressing, and helped me to understand some of the divisions in the US. I appreciate your thoughtful review of the movie and will definitely watch it. I do think the sudden rushes to anger reflect the unpredictable behaviour of many people with addictions. They certainly happened in the book.

One of the best movies I've seen for a long time, absolutely great . Something is definitely wrong with the critics that put this movie down, keep your opinions to yourself, s & stop trying to turn people against watching it . It is a brilliant movie, let people judge it for themself, s . If you don't like it, keep your trap shut .

I read the book and saw the movie. The movie is more of the family story without all of the "why's" that the book provided (socio-economic background). This movie is worth the watch just to see Glenn Close, Amy Adams, and Owen Asztalos. Forget the story, ...watch the performances. Wow!

I liked it. While I don't think it is Howard's best work by any means, I don't think it deserves the hate either.
And I have known people in my life that had those type of manic personalities and I found it to be one of the most honest tbings about the movie.
Great review, as always!

Middletown, Ohio. My home town. Produced some popular people. Susan Perkins. Miss America 1978, Jerry Lucas, NBA Hall of Fame. Cris Carter, NFL Hall of Fame. To name a few.

Screw the mainstream movie critics. This film is getting negative reviews all because JD Nance is a well known, self-avowed conservative.

Excellent work by Ron Howard and crew! Hard to believe it was in Netflix, considering the low quality of what they usually offer.
