Hyundai IONIQ 5 2021 Review @carsales.com.au

With a concept-car design that straddles a strange line between SUV and oversized hatchback, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the Korean car-maker’s first new-generation electric vehicle.

Built from the ground up on a dedicated EV platform, the blocky crossover offers 400km-plus range from its 72.6kWh lithium-ion battery, is available in both rear-drive and all-wheel drive configurations, and delivers several very useful features.

With a starting price of just over $70,000 the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is more expensive than the Telsa Model 3 – Australia’s top-selling EV – and also the incoming Polestar 2, both of which open from just under $60,000.

But Hyundai says it is already expected to sell out of its initial shipment of 400 vehicles, which will be followed by cheaper versions and even a high-performance N flagship.

Does Hyundai’s first dedicated EV live up to the hype? Will demand continue to outstrip supply after early-adopters take delivery? We dig in to find out if it’s a genuine game-changer or just another overpriced EV from a mainstream car-maker.

I'd wish they put digital wing mirror displays. Much Better feature and hopefully the new trend of new cars. With the screen inside the cabin and a camera outside, the vision of the side of the car is not impaired by rain, foggy glass, glare and is likely to have night vision.

I would wait a few years before buying one to let the dealer network come up to speed on maintaining them.

I’ve had my two month old ioniq in at a dealer for a warranty issue for almost a month now with still no sign of getting it back anytime soon.

I expressed concern to Hyundai head office before dropping it off about the dealers ability to fix it and they told me that they were a blue star highly trained EV dealer.

Shame because the car seemed pretty good but if it’s a month plus whenever something goes wrong why would you buy it?

The car is great but you're right to put it in perspective of the price. $75.9K plus on road cost is still premium price. Might be a car for early trend adopters but the high upfront cost negates the long term fuel savings. I hope there will be cheaper EVs in the future to compete directly with current ICE models.

Interesting how the car changes from market to market. Here in the USA when it actually shows up, we'll get the heads up display but not the power rear seat or the zero gravity seat for the passenger.

For some buyers, the 10k difference between the Tesla Model 3 vs the Ioniq 5 would favour the tesla for budget purposes.

Agree with other comments re pricing v Model 3 - you're not comparing equivalent model levels. In any case, I'd be prepared to pay a bit extra to sidestep the build quality issues of the Tesla.

The UK seems to have a few more features in their ioniq 5.

You pricing is extremely misleading. The top range Ioniq 5 is 74, 990 before on road costs. The top range Model 3 is 84, 900 before on roads. You need to correct this. Base model to base model there is a 10k+ gap but the equipment levels on the Ioniq 5 base spec is far superior to the Model 3.

"Never mind the rare earth" metals that go into refining petrol for ICE cars - (cobalt to remove sulphur), or platinum & palladium in the catalytic converter, or the rate earths in ICE car electronic systems, or the endless fossil fuel consumption...

He has compared the top spec model price with the bottom of the range Model 3.... can we get some professional reviews? There seems to be no substance to carsales reviews anymore....
