New Hyundai Ioniq 5 in-depth review: the EV that does it all?

The new Ioniq 5 is the first standalone model from Hyundai’s electric brand. It represents a watershed moment in Hyundai’s electric future, with angular retro-modern styling, a high-tech interior, impressive performance and close to 300 miles of range in flagship guise. With the EV market now bursting with upmarket models like the VW ID.4 and the Audi Q4 e-tron, is the ‘8-bit’ styling of the Ioniq 5 enough to make it stand out? Richard Ingram takes it to the Carbuyer test track to find out.

No wonder it can charge so fast and have so big range, it's made in cooperation with Rimac.

Love that design. Very cool. Remember Hyundai in the 90s!

A couple of weeks ago I managed to test drive one of these in premium spec 73 AWD. Most things impressed but the interior was cheap looking for a car over £40k. The dull grey cloth trim on the seats looked like it came from a hyundai from the 90s. However the tech and performance had won me over. Every review on-line including yours, demonstrates the ultimate spec (leather), yet when I asked Hyundai where I could view such a car, they could not help. Is this why all the reviews are carried out abroad ? Are you reviewing stuff not yet available in the UK ?
shame

You should mention, the onboard charger (AC) can manage up to 11 kW, which takes a bit less than 8 hours to fully charge it.

Unrelated issue. I drive an Mitsubishi Pajero sport with 60 000km’s driven. Shortly after a service my handbrake dash warning light came on. I took it to a Mitsubishi service a dealership. They assessed it and reported that my handbrake linings are worn completely and metal on metal. They charged me $160 for checking and then more than $500again for replacing the handbrake linings. They also warned me not to use my vehicle until they replaced the parts that took 7 days. I contacted Mitsubishi complaints and head office for clarity on this. It seems they don’t check hand brake linings on services and it is OK for them if one break down at an inconvenient time with worn handbrake linings. Even though my vehicle is only on 60 000km’s and it is not expected for hand brake linings to fail so early they refuse to explore it any further than me paying twice to have my linings replaced. They also also have no answer whatsoever when I asked, how do I prevent this in the future…so if you drive a Mitsubishi you can’t rely on dealership services to warn you prior to having you breaking down and having to pay twice for something that can be fixed at services. It seems like checking the handbrake linings yourself is the only option. I think this is appalling from Mitsubishi.

How much did it cost to rapid charge 🤔

So we should disqualify the Zoe according to Carbuyer, despite being a category below and 10k cheaper… comparing cars just because they are both electric makes sense at all.

Great review Considered but ultimately could not justify spending over 45K on a Hyundai. ( maybe snobby no doubt ) Think the looks on the Hyundai are cool but for me they didn’t ride as well as my Q4 etron, plus infotainment nowhere near as good on the Hyundai. Considering that although both are well equipped, the price difference is not significant over a Q4 / Eqa. Plus range on the 40 is decent enough!

1:35, sound engineers didn't do the right job and lower down the higher frequencies.
