Why I Stopped Drinking.

A new study found that Gen Z is the soberest generation. I have seen more and more celebrities publicly discuss their sobriety. In my own life, I gave up drinking earlier this year. Meanwhile, companies are starting to cater to this cultural shift as bars continue adding more 'mocktails' to their menus. Why is the younger generation giving up alcohol?

I quit drinking after living with an alcoholic roommate. Nothing takes the shine off of drinking like watching it destroy another person's life.

When I met my fiancé two years ago I was an alcohol addict. She helped me realize that it’s not worth it and she has absolutely changed my life and helped me become the person I’ve always wanted to be. I’ve now been 100% sober for almost two years. I hope that more people decide to live alcohol free!

Living sober in a drunk society is the way to go it helps you see all the truly psychotic people and fake people who can’t live life without being under the influence of something like drugs or alcohol

Good you for guys, I quit too. Unfortunately not until many hurts and bad choices made me sick and tired of living a crazy life. It took me getting a dui right around son’s wedding, very embarrassed. Especially due to when 15 my father was killed by a drunk driver, horrible accident. Much loss. Changed my life and now work w at risk kids and try to show them a better way to live. It’s really great when known ppl like you too can set an example. Ty

As an 18 year old German, I am proud to say I have never drunk any kind of alcohol beverage, which is quite the achievement in rural Germany where pretty much everyone drinks alcohol in some form.

I'm 18, and have never touched alcohol or drugs, and never plan to. Not even when I turn 21, and I think it's dumb that people criticize others for making a healthy choice for themselves, especially when there's a culture around drinking

My mom explained it this way once, “No one ever wakes up and says ‘I’m going to be an addict’ they try a sip, it makes them feel good, so they drink more. It doesn’t even have to be the first time. People can drink once and be fine…” As a teen I’ve realized that all those times my mom talked to me giving me warnings like that, there are kids who never get that. She is truly awesome. My dad’s sober now, he’s an amazing man, it’s just sad a lot of important life lessons came from him. To all of you who are sober, you truly did great. I hope you keep doing good and congrats on sobriety.

My dad used to drink a 12-pack of beer in just under one hour every night after work. Like, EVERY. Night. He wasn’t an abusive drunk or anything, and I mean no disrespect to anyone who drinks casually, but even back then, I’ve never been able to tolerate drunk people, even in the slightest. So I decided to stay sober for the entirety of my short life. And at 31 years old, I’ve done just that.

As someone who broke from the addiction cycle in my family, I'm extremely happy this is becoming a thing. I've seen what addiction to alcohol and drugs does to a family, and people saying enough is incredible.

Side note: to everyone tackling sobriety and recovery, congratulations, and keep going! Whether you're on 1 day or 1 decade, I know it's a battle every single day. Just know you're not alone, and theirs people pulling for you! Even this random youtube commenter

As someone who has never had a drink, this makes me feel that much better. I already felt pretty good about the decision but on the rare occasion I felt like I was missing out on something because of how much it’s glamorized in media. I was also treated a bit like a square by my friends at university when I would go out with my friends.
I have never felt like I missed anything socially by not drinking though, I’m quite happy to talk and dance without anything. I am glad i never put myself in compromising positions by drinking and not being in full control of myself.

I keep telling my 8 year old daughter that women like you are who she should be looking up to and this video just reiterates that. Thank you for being a good role model to our next generation of women in a world that is trying so desperately to destroy them.

I’m 28 and made the BIG decision this year to quit alcohol for good. In the past, I always find that when drinking alcohol, I get severely depressed and introduce extreme negative thoughts. I was mostly a social drinker, not really a frequent drinker so it’s easy enough

Well done, Brett. I finally laid off the sauce in 2019. Stuff caused quite a bit of grief for me. My life is infinitely better for it. You're brave for sharing this and fantastic job for using your platform to educate young people about it ❤

I'm 37 now and stopped drinking when I was 23. I made the conscious decision to quit altogether for probably similar reasons to most people, I use to drink underage and when I turned 18 which is the legal age in Australia, I began binge drinking. I stopped abruptly mostly due to my father suffering from alcoholism when I was a teen and out of all the decisions I've made in my life quitting alcohol is definitely a highlight

I am 17 and from the Czech Republic, the country known for drinking the MOST beer. Alcohol is very normalised here and the people that don’t drink are the minority. It’s very hard not to succumb to alcohol when all my friends and family members are always drinking, especially since I have various mental health problems. Seeing people like you discuss this topic is so great! Love you for this Brett! <3

I LOVE that this is getting normalized!! The way our society thinks that alcohol is necessary to have fun or just function is terrifying to me. I'm loving this progression

I'm a Christian and our family doesn't drink because we know how risky it is. Not for any religious reasons. Its just so easy to get a hold of you. This encouraged me that even though lots of people drink in my life. I can still see what I've chose to do makes sense and is probably much safer if I don't.
