I made the decision to quit 2 days ago after 10 years of drinking regularly and lot of times getting in trouble and risking my life. I’m doing this for myself and my wife too! Wish me luck!

Last time I got drunk I was sick in the street like a total scumbag, did endless shots with fake pub friends, woke up on a friends sofa (unsure how I got there) and had a 3 day hang over in which I thought I had alcohol poisoning. When I caught up with my daughter who I hadn't seen in a week, all I wanted to do was sleep it off. I haven't touched a drop since 5th April (longest stint since teenage - not even a mid week top up. Nothing). Got rid of all the booze in the house. I'm done. Since then I have so much more energy and I'm a better person. More focused and a better dad.

Hello everyone I’m glad I found the site very informative. I retired in 2022 and had a lot of time on my hands to sit around and do some drinking. I should’ve kept working. It got so bad that my daughter noticed my decline very quickly. She showed me a picture of myself one year prior and then showed me a current picture and it was drastic. I had to immediately go look in the mirror because I thought I still looked cool, because I looked 10 years older in one year and some change. I called recovery centers of America. Even my address went upstairs, took a shower, pack my bags and went away for 30 days. It was a great decision. It lasted for about nine months. I’m not as bad as I was before but I see I still got a lot of time on my hands so I have to make some changes. My start date is going to be March 8, 2024.

I plan to quit drinking for a month in 3 days. August 11th. It is my 89 year old father's birthday. I have been mindful of my drinking for over a year now, and that has been a blessing however I am ready to take the next step. This video is helpful at this point in my journey. I hope for success.

Did detox in 2017 was drinking at least 6 beers and 3 shots of vodka a night. Now slowly been drinking more and more from a couple to 5 a day. So last Monday I deiced to taper it off and try to quit again. Yesterday I started to get sick and nauseas, hope that goes away soon and pull through this.

Super helpful video! I have been a light drinker all my life and don't abuse alcohol. But if you're a problem drinker you need to quit or cut it down. The lower your weekly consumption of alcohol, the lower your lifetime risk of an alcohol related illness. If you're a heavy drinker, stopping suddenly or reducing your alcohol use too quickly, can lead to severe health complications, including seizures and even death. Consult your GP or a local alcohol counsellor before you try quitting. Thanks for the valuable and very useful information Doctor O'Donovan!🙌❤👍

Drinking for 15yrs and have tried quitting in the past 2 years (failed). No dependency (no shaky hands, trembling, etc). No cravings during the day or party. No health issue. Only time i drink is before bed. I used to be able to perform normally even after drinking. But with body getting used to alcohol, the volume has surged to the point even i feel is too much (700ml whisky over 3 nights). This amount causes me to have headache in the morning and/or overslept till afternoon.
I want to quit because I want my morning time back, I want my clear mind when i wake up in the morning. I really dislike the headache in the morning.
Sleepy disorder occur within 3 days of no drinking but i managed to overcome that. On 5th day onwards, every night, I feel the urge to drink before bed. Tried all kinds of distractions, yet to be successful. Will continue to try.

Quick question (hopefully) - I want to cut down on alcohol for my overall health. I have one glass of wine each night (according to bottle, it is actually 2 standard drinks). It's my way of relaxing and winding down after a really hard day. I'm a mum to 3 kids, the eldest with special needs, and my days are incredibly stressful and exhausting. There is no off switch for me and no one else to take over the care needs of my eldest while I have a break. I can't even take one day off as some of what my eldest needs can't be done by anyone else, and needs doing several times a day. There is nothing else I know to do in place of that glass of wine to help me relax and unwind once the kids are finally in bed. I watch a show, have a glass of wine and try and switch off from daily stressors. What can I replace it with? I need one small thing that I can look forward to at the end of each day when I'm so exhausted that I don’t know how to get through another day. I know a glass of wine isn't a healthy way for me to have a few moments of down time, but I honestly don’t know what I would replace it with that has the same effect and is achievable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I love how I feel after 3 days of no beer and want to see how I feel after 1 week, 2 weeks and so on but get sudden urges late afternoon to go buy beer and wake up in the morning pissed at myself saying ok today is the day and it never happens. I’m 55 and just want to find better health…even if I could stop M-F I would be happy…anyway, putting this out there makes me feel a little better
