Here’s how it works:

1. Landing Zone is the area from the goal line to the 20 yard line (same as the red zone)

2. Kicks that land in the zone must be returned

3. If kick is short of the landing zone (e.g. 21 yd line), offense gets the ball at the 40 yd line

4. If ball goes through the endzone or is caught inside of it and downed, offense gets the ball at the 30 yard line

5. (This one is the most confusing imo) If the ball falls inside the landing zone but rolls into the endzone and is then downed there, offense gets the ball at the 20 yard line.

If I were a coach, I would tell my kicker just to boot it through the end zone every time and let them have it at the 30. Not worth the risk of accidentally kicking it short of the landing zone or getting it inside the zone and then giving up a return TD since there aren’t really any layers/lanes for the kicking team anymore.

My prediction: small increase in returns.

My guarantee: explaining to my 79 year old dad how this works every single Sunday.

This is stupid. NFL created its own problem by ruining the kickoff in the first place and then does this to try and fix it. All they had to do was move the spot back to the correct location

It’s YAG. The kickoff was the most exciting time where anything can happen. It was reminiscent of battle and charging at the enemy. NFL is gettiner kuked out by XX’s who want to sweeten the game.

The craziest thing is the static field. No one moving feels like it takes all the energy out of the play. Even when no one was returning anything you still at least had all the players running when the ball was kicked. This play might turn out to be more action heavy, but it FEELS like it’s really boring.

Personal The news rules this nfl season doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Shorter kickoffs can't hit a player a certain area of the body- I feel like the fun is being taken out of football! If there are any fans out there that want to express their opposition let me know. Hell even announcers on ESPN are not very enthusiastic about the new rules.
