Finally we get the pay off of the new kick off rule which is a genuinely exciting return! I'm down with that as long as it keeps looking like this!

Butker: I mean, look at you. You don't even have a name tag. You've got no chance. Why don't you just fall down?

Never thought I’d see Harry Buttkicker tackle a man via sheer intimidation

There was also the James Butler safety in 2009. The crazy part about that game: it was the only win the Rams, the team Butler played for, had all season.

Butker: The Power of Christ compels you!
Washington: Ima dip out at this point.

Correction: That was Tank Bigsby on the second return who got shoe slap tackled.

One thing is for sure this play has exposed how bad the tackling can get.

its funny how the jaguars said that they didnt do something special for the kickoff they just used the base scheme. Also the special team coordinator put a lot of work in to understand all the rules of the new kickoff so he directly told Doug Pederson that the play is a safty.

I’m not over killing the onside kick. Or at least the surprise factor. Now it has to be announced. We’ll see how that goes.

"The power... the splendor... the glory... the magnificence! Oh, how much aura must one man endure?" - Parker Washington (probably)

I think we’ll see a few crazy things each weekend until the teams get used to it. Then it’ll be once every month or two that someone misses a tackle.

Concept I want to see them try.
1 returner in the end zone, 1 at the 10 to catch the kick. Rear returner times it so right after forward returner catches it, he pitches to the endzone guy running at speed already.
Couldn't do that with old kickoff cause the defense was already there so the extra second saved from skipping accelerating wasn't worth the risk. Could be worth it now with everyone else so far back

I like the new kickoff actually. It isn’t just a break through the first line of defense and you’re home free type of deal. Though I do think it does make it easier to bring one back to the house. I was surprised how many returns were getting stopped and even when someone broke through the initial line of defense there were still more defenders to weave through.

I'm a Jags fan and I still don't like it. I feel like I won't be able to look at football the same

This was the game to watch for sure for this rule. You've got Andy Reid on one side and his old protege on the other side trying to outduel each other.

The only good part of this rule is reverting back to "the ball is live and you actually MUST catch it", not ignore it with your hands in fists out to the sides because it's going to land in the end zone. The funny thing is that safety is the way things used to be. They've just had so many rule changes recently that people are confused.

Give the Jacksonville staff credit for leveraging the scheme like this. I don't think any other team the first week of the preseason tried anything like this. I think as time goes on more teams will try schemes on the kickoff to see if they can get more yardage that just a few yards like most teams experienced the first week of the preseason.

Harrison Butker with some next level Steven Seagal tackling right there.
