To address the lowest kickoff return rate in NFL history during the 2023 season and an unacceptable injury rate on kickoffs prior to that, NFL clubs have approved a new kickoff rule for the 2024 season.

To create a new form of a free kick play that is designed to:

Resemble a typical scrimmage play by aligning players on both teams closer together and restricting movement to reduce space and speed.

Promote more returns.

Removing the element of surprise for onside kicks will further kill that late-game tactic, which was already neutered with the previous rule change.

Letting the team know that you are going to do an onside kick, is like calling the bank and letting them know that you are on your way to rob them, while you are on your way there.

I hate that they have to wait until the ball gets to the returner to move. Doesn’t look like football.

The new way is stupid! Eliminating fair catches I can understand, but if they wanted a return attempt on every kick-off, just move the kicker back 10 yards so he can't kick the ball through the end zone.

I've been an NFL fam since I can remember.... switching over to College ball, the new rules have just taken the fun out of the game.

I think putting the ball on the 35 or 40 if not returned is too much. There is a real reason to control which side of the 50 you play on and if you start off at the 40 instead of the 23, you only need one first down to be almost in field goal range. That is not a good thing in my book.

"Onside kicks require declaration". And there's the idiot part. Onside kicks are by nature, a surprise.

I am all for player safety but this is a stupid way of doing kickoffs

After one week of "pre-season" ... If I had to make this work I would (1) Move the kicker back to their own 20 ; (2) Kicking Team at the 50 (something about lining-up in the opposing territory to start is just wrong!) ; (3) Receiving team at their 40. (4) All else can stay the same.

I tried with the XFL's version and couldn't like it or understand it. Seems to just take a unique play like the kickoff and turn it into an even more boring play. Why not just put the kickoffs at the 30 or the 25? Maybe I'm in the minority here... but UGH....

I saw this in the 2023 XFL season, and before that in the European League of Football. I don't recall any touchdowns, but there were virtually no touchbacks or missed target zones, so you almost always got action on kickoffs.

I don't recall a high rate of injuries on kickoff returns, as the powers-that-be claim is true. Let everyone play football again without all these strange and wimpy rule changes!

Let’s just play Rock, Paper, Scissors. Rock wins and starts at the 20, Paper at the 25 and Scissors starts at the 30 . If someone gets a paper cut, a time out is called, a band-aid is brought in to fix the boo boo . Both teams huddled at that yardage, have a few beers and the game is called a draw . Nobody is hurt and both teams get a rainbow Star ! After all, a receiver could have an eye put out by a flying football!

It doesn't make sense for the Texans return team players to be facing their returner and away from their blocks. Simply face the kick team and react when they move forward to cover the kickoff. The coverage team still has to move forward when the returner catches the ball. That's their visual indication the play has started.

I thought the whole idea of the old rules was to discourage kickoff returns by offering pretty good field position at the 25.

How about we got back to the rules from 25 years ago and let them play football. They are killing the game. You can barely touch anyone now.

They should have just moved the kicker 10 yards farther back.
