It's true! Even on a cruise ship, you have the best sleep with the gentle sway of the ship.

1:51-12:02 Ironically sailors on the Belfast used to say that sleeping in a hammock was such a gentle sleep as the ship would virtually rock you off to sleep

It's been about 50 years since I slept in a bunk if I did it now I last about 15 minutes before I have claustrophobia and had to get out of there! But somehow it was a comfortable home back in the day I guess you get used to anything if you have to

The troop ships that carried us to Korea during the "Forgotten War" put us in holds, i.e., sleeping quarters, along with our seabags and combat gear where there was very little space between the four or five levels of bunks. Those who slept below the higher bunks needed to take cover at night as a lot of troops tended to get seasickness and upchuck the latest meal of the day. We had to climb over every seabag and combat pack to get anywhere in the sleeping quarters. It sure as Hell wasn't a comfortable system for the two weeks at sea.

I had the top rack back in the 80s. Your right you have more wiggle room.

My berthing was under the jet shop on the Saratoga.
You definitely had to adjust but once you did, it wasn’t too bad.
I have tinnitus now but…

Don’t leave your rack unlocked while your sleeping!

First Class in a top rack? Unheard of always the middle rack. It is wild to live and work in the same place though. Like at sea a lot of people would go to the Fantail for the after dinner coffee and smoke. A guy would stand the aft lookout watch and then get off watch and go right back to the fantail. I was a BM1 and used to sign off ESWS books

Curious: do they assign people on the same watches the same rack room? Makes sense as you would want to avoid people coming and going at all hours of the watch

Lol back in the day we didn't have breathing apparatus issued. I remember the birthing units kept at a setting between artic and your balls just froze. Every unit that had TV & VCR featured 24/7 adult entertainment... which made no sense to me. You're stuck why torture yourself.
