We learned our lesson. We ditched intros and taking 5 seconds to ask viewers to "hit the like button" because both had terrible dips

What annoys me is that some youtubers will just talk for a really long time saying why and how their video is going to help you/be entertaining, but they havent actually gotten to that stuff, they simply just are talking about it. They essentially just made a really bad intro. Whats worse is when the same youtuber says the exact same things about saying how good their video is in EVERY video.

To fix this just keep it simple and short. Deliver the value right away instead of wasting time saying how your video is going to educate/entertain. Yes you can do that but dont make it longer than it needs to be. Like look at what vidiq just did right in this very video, they didnt waste time and got straight to the point.

We recently discovered that most of our viewers leave within the first 30 seconds of our videos. We decided to ditch a drawn out intro, and on some videos. Added a highlight reel. This has worked wonders. Thanks vidiq!

Top tip : to balance your audio, get a compressor vst for your editing software, i recommend tdr Molotok, a quick YouTube tutorial will show you how to use that apply that to your Audio and it'll sound balanced

If you want more flamboyance you can get a dynamic eq and a tonal eq, I recommend tdr nova and ignite amps pteqx-1

Ps: I'm an audio engineer and all these vsts are free :)

Edit: you can also get renegate to remove background noise

I find that the thing that annoys me the most is when the music overpowers the commentary, when the music doesn't even match the scenario, and when the person spends way too much time on the intro.

For me, the most maddening aspect of beginner YouTuber "advice" videos is they are not at the beginner level.

For instance, I started out with VideoPad because all of the "advice" gurus said it was the easiest to learn and use. Well, easy doesn't mean good. A good example of this is where you talk about listening to your video for audio quality. In VideoPad, I can barely hear myself over the background music (on sound level 2) but after it is exported the music is barely noticeable. On sound level 7, after exporting, I can barely hear myself over the music. So, the video software is crap.

The same is true for cuts, B rolls, etc. The software I have doesn't allow that.

The trouble is, whenever I have listened to the "gurus, " their advice has backfired. I even have a saying on my channel, "YouTubers lie." It is meant to alert them that YouTube content can't be trusted and to be weary.

We small channels need to know the best equipment and software systems for the money. With that said, you expert gurus that we're turning to also need to realize we are not getting paid, we don't have much money to put into equipment/software, and we don't have the skill set (or possibly the equipment) to know what a B roll is or how to use it, camera angles, etc.

I personally hate jump cuts, like you had at the beginning of this video. A crop (also known as a zoom) cut is much easier on the eye.

Help a lot, thanks! Still a beginner, my vid is still bad tho, not gonna lie..

i do struggle to find the balance with "dead space" and pauses, cos people keep saying cut it all out, then as you say, it has an unnatural flow, some types of vid can do that fast past thing, but i think going forward for me, i will try leave some natural pauses in, not all, cos y'know know! too much is too much!
it is definitely tricky to find the balance...

i do find some channels with their transitions - the zoom in and out fast - and all those things, send me dizzy, i don't enjoy that experience as a watcher, so i would not do that as a creator.

admittedly some sort of something would work for me to create, but not shouty fast paced and loud!
that is never gonna be me.

What an awesome video, i really enjoyed how you brought this to our attention. thank you for taking time to give us some interesting ideas and tips, things to look into.

See you tomorrow (in stream)

Why is this unlisted?
8:30 Thanks for bringing this up because I find color stuff in editing to be overly underrated! People often forget to use this and I personally find it lazy when a video isn’t color corrected.

You are so right about audio and music. I am filming aesthetic vlogs and music has to be low, in my opinion. And at some point non existent, unintentional ASMR is so good. On the other hand when I film budgeting videos I use no music so I emphasize on my voice. Thanks for sharing 💕

I always put a hard limiter on my ‘Talking’ audio channel and ‘Background Music’ audio channel. This way I’m sure all spikes are pretty solid, and I can boost the individual clips a bit to be sure all audio levels are pretty consistent.

For anyone in the struggle right now understand it will not get better unless you start getting aggressive with your goals and disciplining yourself. I know its hard to see long term but you have to learn to play strategically and tactically. Better days will come.

I think this is one video I need to watch over and over again. Probably anytime I'm about to edit.

Something that makes as a viewer to leave a video right away is when it is shaky. If the camera is moving way too much, I’m out. Makes my head hurt.

When I’m making videos, audio for me is tricky - I film in my yard so I battle outdoor noises like loud neighbors, traffic, the AC running, planes overhead, other dogs barking, etc.

I am still learning by each video I make. I made terrible mistakes in the past about audio balancing. Nowadays, I pay more attention. Thanks guys.

Question around branding consistency. I have different Let’s Play series going at one time. I would assume it is good / acceptable to have different styles for each series to make it easier for viewers to quickly differentiate the series.

I want to see every creator watch your channel. The intros, the pauses, the crazy amount of dead air is real. It's like people say to themselves "I am going to be a creator on YouTube, and I'm not going to learn anything before I start, I'll just make a video like the first one I saw in 2005, and go!" Ridiculous!

Thank you for another great video, you guys are so easy to watch and listen to!
I would like to add what drives _me_ crazy: when the video is recorded in selfie mode (such as for shorts and reels) without flipping the image. If there are any objects with text on them in the show, it's quite disturbing to see them mirror-imaged.
