3 WAYS TO FLATTEN A BOARD | Dave Stanton Live!

I will demonstrate 3 ways to flatten boards and also discuss a couple more. All 3 methods will involve machines from a thickness planer to a CNC. Some people will use a router sled and some will use a hand plane and winding sticks. All work to achieve the desired result but with differing times and dollars involved.
This is the beginning of a new project, a massive table totally out of white cypress pine that we will commence next week.

Hi Dave. Every time you use your planner thicknesser I turn green with envy, definitely high up on my wish list. You made the first method look so simple but I was wounding if the sled method would be better for someone ( like me) that has never used a planner thicknesser. As to the length of video's (re tee track video) I would happily watch 4hr video of your because I'm always leaning, never boring and always engaging. Thank dave. Another great video. Cheers Sam.

You asked about the short videos: A quick one is a good one!

Best, most instructive, video I've seen that shows how to actually use a jointer to great effect in a detailed and really useful fashion. Also, great tips on how to use a thickness planer in conjunction with a jointer.

A nod from Canada to say we appreciate your irrepressible Aussie positivity. Keep up the good work.

One small suggestion, as I've seen some comments about the length of this video. An option would be -- given that you've done all of the heavy lifting and filming, would be to do a secondary edit of this video to the essential action bits and your invaluable tips, limiting it to a max of 15-20 minutes as this seems to be the limit for many viewers. You could choose to separate the CNC piece into its own video, if that makes sense. And replace some of your descriptions from the original video with a more succinct voice-over at some points, possibly adding insights (or type on the screen) as you go. Give this series of edited videos their own name, such as "On Target" or "To the Point". Your viewers can then choose to watch these short/tight videos, while you provide a link on them to the full length so that those who wish can dig into the detailed version if and as they choose. These summary videos are likely to get far more views, and they will have real longevity, being viewed for years to come.

Awesome and very instructional video Dave. I reckon you should do a 10-15 minute edit and upload that too when this one get archived to your second channel, would be a shame for the info to be hidden.

I see a need too have a dedicated tape measure holder at the planner. Plenty of wall space there too just have one hanging :D

8:40 I have been using my scrub plane to take down those high spots and get the one face close, then I run it across the jointer to make it flat. I've tried splitting the difference as you do but it doesn't work for me. Or more correctly I can't make it work. That's my fault. But after identifying the high spots the same way you did I can flip the board over on the bench and hit it with the scrub plane on those two corners until it doesn't rock on a flat surface. Then I know I've got it fairly close and head back to the jointer.

Hi, I like the safety glass built in to ear muffs, what’s the maker and model on that?

Hello Dave, I have just purchased your bench plans. When I went into the links all the parts were not available and a statement saying they don't know if they will ever be available. Are there any other suppliers you could suggest to help me out please.

It seems your CNC should be able to automatically speed up or down depending on the current load on the spindle motor. Those long run should be a full speed then when the cutter hits wood it should automatically slow to the proper speed.

Don't get me wrong, love your videos, I just find the live videos too long for me.

I hate watching videos like this where the audio is out of sink.

85k subs, 781 views and 100 thumbs up....but only 1 comment. maybe that's because your video is 1hr and 14min long on the 3 ways to flatten a board. maybe all the viewer were so board from this video they had no energy to leave a comment. I'm only 7 min into this video I am ready to fall asleep.
