Why Did Palpatine Need Mas Amedda? Why Did Palpatine Need Mas Amedda? When the Sith Lord was ascending to become the next Chancellor, Mas Amedda was making his own rise to become the senator of Chagria. Rather than eliminating a rival, Sidious decided to retain Amedda as the Vice Chancellor, after he had motioned a Vote of No Confidence against Valorum. Having gained the trust of Sidious, by extending debates against Valorum, Amedda was used by the Sith, to direct future military ventures such as the Strategic Advisory Cell, which would later build the Death Star. Amedda had another use for the Sith, which was to maintain the secret identity of Sidious, so when the Jedi started to narrow the real Sith to the Senate, Mas Amedda was able to buy Sidious time, before he was able to execute Order 66. As a Grand Vizier, Amedda never wanted to the throne, only the status that was attached to it, and he would go down in history as a mere tool of the Sith Lord’s regime.
