in my Greek textbook there was a version that said that Icarus flew close to the sun because he was enchanted by its beauty (and the beauty of Helios/Apollo)

So many people know the story of Icarus, that the whole "Daedalus trying to kill his nephew but Athena turning him into a bird" thing gets overlooked.

To me, the most interesting thing is how the "flying too low is also bad, " generally gets forgotten about altogether (probably because we don't have a dramatic example to go with it).

I grew up with a slightly different version:
Icarus got lower to the sea and was warned about the wings getting heavy, so he flew close to the sun to dry them off, forgetting that the wax can melt.
