To be fair to Poseidon the salt water spring was only a symbol for the real gift. The actual gift was that if Athens named itself after Poseidon (Poseidonville?) than they would never lose a battle at sea and would become a great navel power.

I know she was foolish for her hubris and everything, but I mean... She was in the weaving competition of her life against a GOD, and she decided to take this opportunity to out that god's father and uncle for their many sexual misconducts? My head canon is that she knew she wasn't going to win, but decided to go out swinging by trolling Athena and calling out her adulterous father and uncle. What a badass.

Also Athena is a huge daddy's girl so obviously she takes offense to Arachne portraying her dad in such an unflattering light.
Arachne's one of those mortals who engaged in what I like to call "The Ancient Greek Darwin Awards"; it's one thing to be a mortal who made an innocent mistake or was in the wrong place at the wrong time or be Cassandra--all of those are tragedies, imo. But it's another thing to basically say "Lol, I'm BETTER than [insert god here]" and then MOCK said god to their face.

I actually had a character in an RPG I ran recently play as a drider who was a descendant of Arachne who was on a blood-fued to avenge his ancestor. Everybody else didn't have things planned so far out, so it basically became a tale of four dudes on a road trip to kick Athena's ass.

They didn't even get close.

Makes you wonder if the Greek gods are just sitting up on Olympus waiting for some fool to challenge them so they can pull oit a list they premade just for the occasion.

Lets see I already did ironic punishment last time and turning him into an animal would mean I've done it three times this month. Oh I know, why not do this one, invite him to come to Olympus, only if he can cut my lightning bolt. Did anyone else first hear the version where arachne's tapestry insults all Olympians, not just Zeus and Poseidon, thus infuriating Athena and causing the whole, spider thing.
