Miscellaneous Myths: Kusanagi No Tsurugi

Quick! What's your favorite magic sword? Personally I like Stormbringer, but it's kind of a jerk. My historically-precedented fave is definitely Grasscutter (formally Kusanagi-No-Tsurugi), though, and that's what we're talking about today!

This video also contains a brief look at Susanoo-No-Mikoto, the storm god, when he battles the eight-headed snake Orochi and beats it through strategic use of booze. That one was too short for its own video, so here we are.

WRONG! There IS one thing more anime-classic than a magic sword...A GIANT magic sword.

"It's not a katana"
Yeah, it's right there in the name - Kusanagi no _Tsurugi_ .
A 'tsurugi' is a straight-bladed, double-edged japanese sword.

“sorry I threw a horse at you.”
“friends?”
WHY IS THIS SO FUNNY

"Not every Japanese sword is a katana! God damn it anime!"

For some reason this reminded me of the Naruto anime, which oddly enough is one of the few series that actually depicts Kusanagi No Tsurugi somewhat accurately as a double edged straight sword. Hell, even the Naruto manga got it wrong as it depicts it as a stereotypical curved edged katana.

Is that why Link uses his sword so often to cut grass? The master sword is a grasscutter.

Imagine if he was actually named Susan.

Those three artifacts are also a part of Sailor Moon, Sailor Neptune with the mirror, Sailor Uranus with the sword, and Sailor Pluto with the jewel (in her staff). I'm not really sure why, but it is pretty neat.

Myths are so much fun to reference out of context.

0:29 Didn't realize my grandma was a thunder god.

...Actually, it makes total sense. I'm sure her neighbors hear loud rumbling whenever she listens to heavy metal.

"Trolling of his sister"?
More like... Killing the god of food out of disgust while representing her.

Just realised that all of the weapon types in the PS2 game Okami are based on the three relics, the beads are based on the jewels, the reflectors based on the mirror, and obviously the swords on the... sword. :I
