I get real tired that people think a black belt is this ultimate fighter. Its not. In fact the traditional black belt is know as shodan which translates to first level. A black belt just means they have mastered the basics and are still learning.

Regarding the knee dislocation, I had always interpreted it as an attack on the hip joint. I'd be interested to read your interpretation of that particular situation.
I loved the video concept and the explanations.
Yours is the only reaction to this scene that I've seen to mention the plot armour.

in those days
especially in the JPN military
medical intervention consisted
of "if he dies he dies"

The first Ip man has always been one of my favourite movies, and coincidentally this is one of my favourite fight scenes. Fascinating video doctor.

Hi Doc,
I believe, at the point 5:41 mark, is supposed to be a hip dislocation maneuver! These maneuvers were quite common in the old days! Breaking the pelvis or the hip to end the opponent!

Ow. I knew those injuries were bad watching this but.. ow. Love your work, love this movie, so glad to see you cover it. Curious if In a short you could break down the fight between ip man and the general, I’m curious the level of beat down in that fight.

Hello Doctor! I really like this movie, as I'm into this film genre, and while I knew that what happens to the black belts was brutal, this just takes it to the next level. OUCH!.

Also, since you were wondering why the attackers don't all converge on Ip Man at the same time, it's mostly to avoid hitting each other/interfering with the movements of each other. It's hard to do things like a spinning kick to build momentum if your buddy is next to you. It also has to do with "sportsmanship" though applying that to the context of the movie is a bit of a stretch. In any case, it's usually seen as "dishonorable" to hit someone in an unfair manner in sparring matches. Or, maybe they were just THOROUGHLY intimidated (with good reason!) at how badly Ip Man was beating them!

I love this video so damn much! I've always wanted to know the injuries those ten men suffered. Thank you so much for making this. You rock man!

As a Martial artist I find this really fascinating but I have a question for you Dr.
Regarding the black belt who was repeatedly punched in the chest. Could this cause irregular heartbeats? Or even Cause death from sustaining that many chess flows and that rapid a succession?

I was dying when he posted his head on the black belt sitting outside “maybe you should reconsider” 😂😂😂

When you know its a movie and no one is really getting hurt, nothing is more enjoyable than a good fight scene.

I love these videos. He watches this over-the-top fight choreography and sits there in almost clinical detachment describing horrific potential injuries. This is amusingly punctuated with light flashes, sound effects, interspersed film snippets and the like. I paused at 4:21 because I was cracking up and didn't want to miss anything. Love this guy. :) HAHAHAHAHAHA

According to yoshi sudarso (stuntman for power rangers) on gamology's sleeping dogs video, the first rule of fighting multiple people is "you are screwed". So, no, fighting multiple people is not a good idea. If you are forced into it, then you must try to keep all attackers on one side and use any sort of tactics including low blows to get enough room and time to get out of the situation.

5:41 This seems to be meant as a knee dislocation but, judging by the length of the leg being shown....that's a long ass lower leg.

fabiank.

Standing 5'3" and weighing 130lbs, the true Ip Man would have had to rely heavily on a submachine gun if there was any hope of him surviving against 10 attackers.
