In a sense their age makes them stronger because that means they have been pushing themselves for a long period of time .

Basically Viltrumite powers are like a muscle, keep exercising to get stronger and that's the reason why Mark caught up with adult Viltrumites because he's been pushed to his limits again and again but it depends upon every Viltrumite differently, yk some of them are stronger genetically so the potential to become stronger and reaching their peak is different for every Viltrumite.

I believe your explanation about Viltrumites' increased strength as they age has a kernel of truth but is largely incorrect. They do not get significantly stronger when coming back from the brink of death but they do get a little stronger with every significant fight. It's much like a weight lifter in real life. When a weight lifter is building for strength, they push their muscles to their limits which actually damages them. Micro tears form within the muscle tissue during the workout and pushing themselves to their limits creates a lot of those micro tears. Over the next few days their body repairs the muscles and actually builds them back a bit stronger than they were before. In this way, weight lifters get a little bit stronger after recovering from every workout and likewise, Viltrumites get a little stronger with every battle, particularly the battles that push them to their limits however even coming back from the literal brink of death does not significantly increase a Viltrumite's strength as you said; they are incremental increases.

Alan the Alien is the only one seen to get a significant and very noticeable boost in strength when coming back from the brink of death. We saw him sit up in his healing pod and rip through it like it was made of paper without even noticing before he looked down and realized what was happening. We then saw him tank a punch from Anissa and remark that it didn't hurt nearly as much as last time he got punched and he was able to bloody her nose with a single punch whereas before when fighting the 3 Viltrumites he couldn't even really hurt any of them.
