I can't say too much, but I'm from a main dealer workshop. If one of these has a 1.6 GDI engine, it has to have been looked after (no services missed), biggest problem being disappearing oil and compression loss in the end. The oil change interval is quite long, and many don't have a service reminder - so not every owner cared enough! Missing a service can mean game over. Scenarios like that aren't uncommon and not at moon mileages. A new 'short block' is the common route - but remember, that 7 year cover is gone for most of these. So be prepared for a big bill unless you buy wisely.

The 1.6, 1.7 and 2.0 diesels are quite good and can last a long while. The 2.0 is a downsized Sorento engine and although agricultural, is very tough. Oil changes are very important for the 1.6/1.7s too as they can suffer sludge problems if not maintained properly. Check for bowed radiator bases on the diesels. Warranty covers this, it's likely been replaced already but worth checking the history.

Early in the model run there was actually a 2.0 petrol, twin cam, which was port injected. That's a great engine. If you're looking at these SLs for yourself, by all means buy one of those, it's the pick of the bunch if you don't want a diesel.

Overall a good buy if reasonably priced/cared for - comfortable, good driving position and very practical. I could write a book about this model but not for public viewing!

Hey Matt, We love the one we bought from you a couple of years back. Reasonable on Diesel and very reliable. Always loved the Sportage shape and driving position. Glad we found a good one!

Back in 2015 I hired a Focus, but they 'upgraded' me to a Sportage in the same spec as this one. I thought it was a downgrade at first as I always thought of Kia as a budget brand, but quickly changed my mind. Did just over 1000 miles over a few days, me and three others, all our luggage and it was brilliantly comfortable, refined and surprisingly economical. Tried to talk my mum into one when she was changing her car. She went for a Qashqai instead which was horrifically unreliable!

This is a very popular car here in Australia. They are very reliable and competitively priced. The seven-year warranty was a smart move by Kia. With fixed-price servicing and seven-year warranty they represent safe, reliable motoring with no nasty surprises. I bought a Kia Optima in 2010, over the next 11 years I did 220, 000 kilometres and the only issue I had was an air-conditioning compressor. It still had the same brake pads and discs when I sold it. The new Kia Sportage is a beautiful car.

I was a long time Ceed owner, same year as this Sportage. Did 90, 000 miles in it. Overall very reliable and Kia were good with the warranty, Ironically had all the issues you mentioned other than the sunroof.

I drove a Sportage 2017 2.0D KX3 for a while as a business car. Leather front and rear seats, Lane assist, amazing JBL audio, and loads of spec. Great car, just underpowered.

Yes! I’ve been waiting for this.
Recently bought a 2021 GTLine-S 1.6 petrol turbo with DCT and love it! It’s been a long time since I had a car that I go for a drive in for no particular reason but I do with this one.
First thing I did was open the pan roof, clean and dress the rubber seals and lithium grease the running tracks.
Thanks for the video Matt, your assessment was fair and true as always 😎

Such a brilliant car. My dad had an IX35 with the 1.7 diesel as a company car and he was extremely impressed with it’s equipment and reliability. Without wishing to sound like every armchair-toyota expert, it did 60k and genuinely didn’t need anything apart from servicing, brakes and tyres. The only issue he had was a breakdown which was the result of some dodgy fuel (my mum had exactly the same issue at exactly the same time from the exact same diesel). Very impressive cars, id say the sofa-caster wheels that some models of Sportage came on ride very well too.

Cheers Matt, great video 👍🏼👍🏼

As far as small SUV’s are concerned, very well designed.

I'm starting to reach 80k now in my 2004 Corsa 1.2, I bought it for £600 nearly 4 years ago with 27912 miles on the clock, 2 owners (Husband then Widow, so technically 1 owner). I'm thinking of changing but I do all my own Maintenance and getting anything newer is daunting, the Electronics now means the Home diy Mechanic can't afford to maintain their own Car.

I have a 2017 Kia LX Sportage (built Dec 2017.) First registrred in NZ mid 2018. I put Fuchs Titan synthetic oil every oil change still clean after 10, 000 kms. It's a fabulous vehicle to drive.
No complaints on my side of the fence.

Hey Matt, I think you got the title mixed with the other Kia you got

Another winner Matt. I had the ix35 counterpart until recently. Just edged it over the Kia with the interior and push button go. I'm always a bit giddy to see a new videos up and you never disappoint. Keep on truckin'

Hi Matt, great video, thank you. I had the 1.7 diesel and put 160, 000 miles on it, over 4 and a half years. Apart from EGR valve, all was good. They look great in white

Matt, a fantastic review of the Kia Sportage. I have the model that you were driving. I did 160, 000 miles before the clutch had to be changed with sensible driving it would have gone on a little longer; however, the majority of my driving was on the motorway. The seats on a long journey are extremely comfortable. The sunroof issue is easily resolved with a little WD-40; the rear parking camera went fairly quickly, but I decided not to incur the expense of having it repaired. I have had many cars over the years; this is one of the very best for comfort on a long journey.

Great car. Owned KX4 for 4 years from new and it never missed a beat. Dealers were excellent too. Free puncture repairs and washes. Only downside seats not that comfy on long trips. Still had 3 years warranty left and dealer snatched my hand off when I eventually sold it.
