The United States has a lot of Filipino nurses. How did that happen?

The Philippines and the U.S. have a long history – a relationship that's been defined at times as colonial, and at other times as a labor contract. As a result, Filipinos were the fifth-largest foreign-born immigrant group in the United States in 2015, and they're overrepresented in certain industries, like nursing and farming. How did that happen? Join Sana Saeed as she explores how America ended up with so many Filipino nurses – and what that says about the history of Filipino migration and labor.

The only time I was hospitalized a Filipino male nurse, took much better care of me than a white female nurse. The white female nurse looked at me as if I was an "alien." my request went unanswered, But the Filipino male nurse took excellent care of me. This was in the United States in the state of Texas. That was the culture in that part of Texas. Glad I had a Filipinio nurse to care for me.

I was deployed back in Iraq and Afghanistan during the war, and even in Djibouti Africa.... most skilled laborer inside the camp are Filipinos: electricians running the power plant, cook crew in the kitchen/dining facilities, crews running the MWR facilities. They are international labor force. Thanks to all the Filipinos friend, hope to see you all again, I loved the karaoke singing with them.

Compared with domestic nurses I have found Filipino nurses to be more compassionate Specially When handing patients dealing with of life situations. So it’s not just the language is important When treating other humans.

I worked with many Filipino nurses while working in Saudi Arabia. They were top-notch and a very kind, caring people. Would much rather have one take care of me than one of my fellow Americans.

When I began my career in nursing I first encountered exceptional nurses in the intensive care/cardiac care unit I worked. I noticed the smartest or wisest nurses happened to be Pilipino. I'm not one to be prejudiced or pit races against each other so this was exceptional for me to notice. One day, I asked one of the most senior nurses - "Filipina", Why are the nurses here from the Philippines so well educated and smart? She quickly said because the smart ones left, (Oh, I thought she joked), and of course was. I said, in fact you need to be smart to work in this career. I love all cultures and people, but Philippine's people have an extra dear place in my heart. Later, I met my partner there-16 years, the happiest of my life. He just earned his PhD in Nursing. Pilipino.

When my granda was hospitalize she was taken cared of by a filipino nurses, I can say they were the most hospitable human beings in this planet ever existed. Eversince back then I admired every filipino people here in the states wether they are nurses or from a different job they all have this traits that everyone should admire, plus they cook great food, As I entered college i've began to be friends with some filipino people and yes nothing's changed their friendliness and attitude towards other race is great. For americans who think or being racist to some filipino I disgrace you all, I hope one day i can come to visit philippines. Filipinos are the best!
