💰 Is keeping Fish expensive?

Although fish are relatively “low maintenance” pets, their initial setup can be costly depending on the type of fish! There are a lot of components that go into a healthy setup and here are mine:

Tank Kit: $100
Heater: $12
Substrate: $22
Plants: $10
Portal: $8.99
Siphon: $15
Test kit: $35
Water conditioner: $8
Fish: $40
Miscellaneous: $40

Total: $290.99

Note: I am setting up a live microworm culture in this video.
Here is the “recipe:”

1. airtight container + filter floss
2. instant mashed potatoes
3. dechlorinated water
4. microworm starter (2.5 oz on Ebay)

Steps:
1. add 1/2 inch layer instant potatoes to container
2. add enough dechlorinated water to reach “mashed potato consistency” - not too dry and not too runny
3. add microworm starter
4. cut/drill/poke a few breathing holes into the lid and stuff with filter floss to prevent bugs from getting in
5. Label with date and restart culture in ~ 1 month
6. After 2 days, harvest m. worms with finger, q-tip, or a softbristle toothbrush and feed to fish :)

my dad had goldfish for almost my entire childhood. some lived for over a decade. he kept them in a giant tank with a good filter, and changed the water often. they started as those tiny feeder goldfish you can buy at walmart and grew HUGE with beautiful vivid scales. they were smart too, they knew the sound of his voice and would swim up to the surface when he called for them! basically, fish are NOT very low maintenence or cheap if you care for them properly...but caring for them properly can be very rewarding :)

It’s sad to know that some people think it’s really easy to have a fish
Just dump it in a bowl barley feed it or over feed it etc.
hopefully more people will understand that fish are still animals and need care ❤

Having any pet is expensive when you properly care for it

160 is what I spend monthly in the low end for my two cats, and that’s not adding up cost of initial supplies, adoption fees, and occasional vet visits. So honestly 200 isn’t bad for a pet

I put my fish in a bowl but I went to transfer her into a Tank. Thanks Britney

I used to work for a pet store. SO many people have no idea how to care for pets - especially fish. I had a lot of people shocked at the amount of supplies, costs, dietary and temp needs, etc of a whole variety of pets.

I was actually doing tons of research about how much it would cost to adopt and maintain glass belly guppies and never really found the answer i was looking for until now. Thank you so much!!

As a fish gupppy/shrimp breeder, I have around 20 tanks at home for breeding and 6 tanks for me to keep for fun and I have spent thousands on all my fish. (:

Edit: wow I got 1k likes for once 👁👄👁

Considering cats and dogs can easily cost hundreds-thousands for healthcare and already cost a lot of time and a steady food supply, fish seem cheaper in comparison. Any pet will cost quite a bit, but every single one deserves all the love and care ❤

200 dollars for any pet set up is really reasonable tbh

in this hobby, all the cost comes from startup. once you get everything established, most of what you bought will last you months. i'm still working on the single bottle of plant fertilizer i bought more than 8 months ago, and i've still got the original container of Tetramin flakes that came with the tank

As someone who has many planted aquariums for the last decade, I gotta call cap on the plants being only $10. Ain't no way unless you have some sort of seller that is cheap af, or a friend with an over abundance of cuttings.

Lol. I'm about $500 in on my tank and don't even have all my fish and shrimp yet. 😅 But I have a much bigger tank than yours and had to start completely from scratch as far as supplies go. 😅

I work in a store for pet supplies and we also sell fish there... people who buy stuff for fish are usually the people with the most expensive bills, recently had a costumer come in who bought a huge aquarium (around 2m in length) as well as everything else that you'd need for it plus LEDs, decorations, plants and of course the fish. All together he paid around 800€

That honestly sounds pretty decent, ive seen a lot of different kinds of tanks, and set ups so its always cool to learn more about.

yes but if you're taking proper care of the fish and the water, you're going to be consistently purchasing water testing kits when they run out, test strips, fish food every month or every other month so this adds up to alot more if you're taking proper care of the fish and most importantly the water

the real distraction is the question that isn't related to the video.
I don't think people would be near as concerned with price if they were working with micro worms.
I think most people would run screaming.

my advice
never spill the micro worms
never spill them D:

My initial plan was the have a low budget second hand set up for a rescue betta I found, $3000+ and some exotic community fish later, my whole life is now centred around my aquarium lol. Their food has even taken over my family’s freezer

Find your local fish clubs! Fishkeepers always end up with tons of extras and are often happy to help a newbie. Plus clubs often have auctions where fish and goods can be won for well under retail 😊
