I won a goldfish as a prize at a fair when I was little. I became absolutely enamoured with the little guy, so my father helped me set up a nice tank for him. Our at-home filtration system was kinda shoddy, so I had to change the water more frequently, but I managed to keep the water healthy for my fish. I became SUPER interested in fish and hyperfixated on them during my Otto's lifetime. My little guy didn't live too long, only a few years, and he got HUGE. My Otto lived for about three and a half years, which is already ancient for an inbred little feeder fish, but it still felt way too short. I was absolutely GUTTED when he died. He was 11-year-old me's whole world, and losing him was all I could think about for the school year. The more I see videos and channels like this talking about fish care, the more confident I am that I gave that little feeder fish the best life I could. I hope to take care of fish again someday, in Otto's honor. They're such beautiful creatures, no pet deserves to be a "disposable" pet.

I hate how fish and hamsters are treated almost as "living toys". I myself was guilty of that when I was a kid, but it was because I was not properly educated.
In fairs when I see gold fish being given to children as a prize, I'm like WHY??

🐠 In fish keeping, education is key.

Each fish has its own unique care requirements so it’s hard to answer this question with a straightforward answer.

Overall, it’s easy to maintain a beautiful tank but it’s also just as easy to make mistakes - I know I’ve made a few that’s for sure.

Hopefully me sharing my experiences helps you to not make the same ones!

I've had fish in my tank and a couple days ago they turned 3 years old! :D we've gotten pretty serious with how we take care of them, we check pH, Ammonia, oxygen, etc on almost a weekly bases and we feed the fishes a variety of live, frozen, meat and veg etc. I love them with all my heart and even though cleaning the tank and draining the water is tiring, seeing them swim around and grow families is more than worth it!!!

"My gold fish lived for years"
The life span of gold fish in the wild is like 30 plus

I used to work in a pet store (corporate chain) and we had specific requirements about who could and couldn’t buy fish. The amount of people I had to turn away because they wanted to keep their fish in tiny bowls (some people like to use live fish as table decorations?) was shocking. People really think fish don’t need care just because they’re small :/

When I was a kid I had some fish as pets and they always died, it made me feel kind of guilty, then when I grew up I started getting interested in fish keeping channels and oh boy, was I unprepared. I think most people don't know how much (if not effort, at least knowledge) it takes to properly take care of a fish and they just give it to children without properly preparing them for the experience

I had a beta, he stuck around way after his intended life span, I took really good care of him, I loved him a lot, he was really pretty and I felt good about the life I gave him, his sponge bob themed tank was a big step up from his little plastic cup from the pet store, Miss you Bow, I love you <3

One of my beta’s named blue survived for about 1-to-2 years or so. We were all surprised

From experience, I find that 'beginner fish' are still harder to care for than a dog. Although bettas and goldfish can live long lives under bad living conditions, as you say. Surviving doesn't equal thriving, the bettas and goldfishes I saw in other people's houses have scales that are falling off and fin rot problems.

If you live in ignorance and buy fish without educating yourself, it's easy. But when you actually do your research, fish keeping is so hard😂 (and expensive AF)!

Me and my dad wanted to keep goldfishes but after I told him what it would take to keep them healthy and beautiful he said it was too much work and we don't have the space to house them.

"beginner pets" aren't just pets you get without knowing sh and just assuming, it's pets to start off with when you've done research AND gotten more info then needed from professionals

I had a nice healthy goldfish the other day. His tank had an algae problem. Algae would not stop coming. My mom bought algae control or something from Walmart, the day after she put it in he wouldn’t eat. I saw that as a problem because he always rushed to eat. I gave it another say but i regretted that. I woke up the next day to find him dead. Would not recommend algae control from Walmart!!! RIP my sweet baby Finn. I will never forget you 💔

I had a beta for about 4 and a half years! His name was flame and he always showed signs of being healthy! We had cared for fish before I got him so we already had previous knowledge! We got him a spacious tank and make sure he had a good diet and always checked decorations or plants for things his fins could be caught on! It makes me so sad that people often don’t take proper care of their betas.

for anyone wanting a fish that is easy to take care of...i recomend a small pleco

it eats algae in you tank...so you don't have to feed it that often, and i think they do pretty well with other fish

i have a small pleco and we have had it for about 3 years now

every fish we have ever had in our tank died...except for the pleco

i would highly recommend these :]
