the compatibility checker says "no compatibility issues were found". But all I can see are thousands of squares on each page.

When I did this, my original creation date was changed to today - how can I update it without losing my original creation date?

My organization doesn't allow me to change any settings. The icon "Info" is greyed out and not clickable. I found only one solution so far: open and save old Microsoft Word 97-2003 documents in Google Docs. It automatically saves them in Microsoft Word Document.
