She's basically the lead character in a videogame: a minimum-personality superhuman protagonist the player can project themselves into. I guess that style of movie can work (Twilight), but I can't imagine it ever becoming a classic.

Maybe we will find out in the third movie that her grandfather is the emperor, explaining Rey's...I mean Mulan's "superpowers". 😅

I was going to spend $30 on it. However, Disney announced that I can wait 3 months and see it in December without paying it. After your review, I am definitely going to wait.

My personal feeling is The Jungle Book was a good live action remake. Not everything needs a live action remake.

I’m Chinese. One thing I don’t like about this movie is the actors’ lines. I feel like the lines were written by a Chinese and translated into English. It just feels weird.

Honestly, as a Disney fan, there are only two “successful” ways for a live-action adaptation of one of their treasured films to work: 1. It is a film that audiences were not so invested in—i.e. Jungle Book / Cinderella / 101 Dalmatians or i.e. not from the renaissance era—and 2. If they are “reimagined” ala Burton’s Alice and Maleficent. Mulan would have been a great material to reimagine, esp since it is the few renaissance-era films that can work sans its music. That said, it says a lot that Disney didn’t choose to invest in one of its best characters’ story.
