Disney's new adaptation takes a crack at another classic: the story of a young Chinese warrior. Sorry, I don't know when it'll come out, but nevertheless... here's the review for MULAN starring Yifei Liu.

Mushu does not appear in the live action remake. Disney made the choice to ensure that the live-action remake stayed true to Chinese culture and traditions. Instead, Disney included a phoenix in the film, which is a sign of peace and prosperity in Chinese culture.

Costume designer Bina Daigeler researched for weeks in China to make sure the wardrobe was accurate.

Casting directors reviewed more than 1, 000 candidates for the role of Mulan. The requirements focused on skills in martial arts, the ability to speak English, and the potential to be an international star.

First Disney live action remake to receive a PG-13 rating. This was mainly because of the brief shots of corpses and scenes heavily implying death. Otherwise, there is no nudity, profanity or blood.

Primarily shot in New Zealand, with a few scenes in mainland China.

Yifei Liu performs 90% of all her stunts as Mulan: horse riding, sword fighting, martial arts, and battle scenes.

Actor and martial artist Jet Li, who plays the Emperor, admitted turning down the role because of the "script and pay." After his daughters reminded him that it was important for Disney to shine a light on Chinese culture, he backtracked and accepted the role.

In the animated film, as part of her disguise and transformation to join the military, Mulan cut off most of her waist length hair. This scene wasn't adapted to the live-action film because it was considered redundant. Historically speaking, long hair on men was very common in imperial China, so Mulan having long hair at the military camp would not have been considered unusual.

It’ll be released on the Disney Plus platform on September 4, 2020. You pay $29 & you basically own the movie for as long as you have Disney Plus. Cheaper & safer than taking the whole family to the theater!

I watched it this weekend, and I thought it was great, not so bad as people make it out to be. It was a worthy remake, and at times really heartfelt, certainly no flop and well worth your money. All the references to the animated version was there to some extent, so it felt familiair and was satisfying, ofcourse only no singing. But singing would feel out of place with the tone of the movie, so I didn't missed it. I thought the actress Liu Yifei portrayed the desperation of Mulan hiding herself as a woman perfectly well done. The ending was perfect, they made Mulan an epic legend as she deserves to be.

Wait no blood in this movie? How odd. I grew up watching Chinese movies, mostly Hong Kong ones from the Shaw Brothers, and they had tons of blood and mutilations galore. Hmmm, now that I think about it, they may not have been rated at that time, LOL. I guess that's how old I am.

Out here in Texas we've got some people who are ready to FIGHT if you make them wear a mask and/or stay indoors. IDK. I just try my best. Thankfully my law school got approved to have classes online, and I'm in the 100% online group. Super excited for the movie! Hope I can watch it soon. Your video gave me a sneak peak! 🤩

Make some videos on our favourite classic horror or action movies from the 80's and 90's. You have a great sense of humor and your video's don't always have to be about the latest movies. What is your favourite "weird" B movie from sci-fi. Talk about anything dude.

Wow.. I got more excited this time especially as you said that its your close 2nd favorite disney remake behind Jungle book(only great disney remake movie as of now, along with cinderella). I'm looking forward to the cinematography of this movie especially the stunt and action sequences as I was blown away by the trailers. You said that there are some flaws, but my concern is, is it epic enough or more than epic since this is from DISNEY which is more into fantasies and magic?

I really want to see live-action Mulan because I think the disney one weirdly good but not exactly the Mulan I get. I mean, what makes Mulan great for me is about the filial pity, how the eldest daughter took the role of the oldest son/children because you can't just leave your family behind. In Asian culture, being the oldest has more responsibility to it and Mulan in many tale, supposed to have a sibling, like younger brother or younger sister. It isn't a romance (which I don't mind to be added), it isn't about being a man, it also isn't about being tough so you can kick people. It's more about responsibility and about how she stay alive, find herself throughout the journey with a willing heart.
When I was watching the Disney, she doesn't know martial art and that's kind of a shame imo, I also practice martial art since I was 10 so the idea that Mulan know martial arts, she just wasn't a soldier plays better for me, there is hard work, there is sweat and there is idea that it may work than doing the impossible. I just like how the premise and I hope it didn't do bad.
I've watched many take on Mulan in Chinese cinema and my favourite is the 2009 movie, even if it doesn't end happily romantic wise, it just felt like a war movie. It was always a war movie about a woman soldier who did the duties of her family.

Nice! I wanted to check this out, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to appreciate it because I never saw the animated movie as a kid. Don't really know why, I just never did. Good to know it tries to survive on its own merits.
