hi everyone! long time no see. i had absolutely no intention to review this movie but after watching it i couldn't help myself. it completely loses the heart of the original animated mulan film but honestly, what did we expect? disney needs to stop ruining our childhoods with these live action adaptations.

many of you expressed concern over my not addressing the controversy revolving mulan’s lead actress as well as not discussing the concentration camps in xinjiang (which is where the movie was filmed unbeknownst to myself). as i’m not familiar with many of the details surrounding these issues i felt it was not my place to speak on them, especially as far more qualified people have discussed it and i would hate to speak over them. i’ll include links to some articles below, but also feel free to comment more of them so we can all continue to learn.

I actually have a big problem with qi being introduced in this movie. In the animated movie, Mulan was a regular person, like me and you, who took it upon herself to gather the strength and courage to do something extraordinary. That’s the lesson I learnt as a kid, « a single grain of rice can tip the scale », which meant me too, if I only worked up the courage to. But with qi, which is essentially a superpower, Mulan is already great and powerful and above us regular folks, and the only obstacle is that she has to « show her true self ». So, in my opinion, the whole lesson of the original movie has been lost :/

"they don't understand what made Mulan special to us." That should sum up almost every life action they made the past few years.

One thing that *really* bugged me was how Mulan's father in the remake was or at least seemed pretty happy to accept the emperor's gifts because he added the line "you have brought great honor to the family" when in the original the father threw the gifts on the ground and says "the greatest gift of honor is having you for a daughter" which is *WAY* more powerful and emotional

They literally took an already interesting female character who worked her ass to earn and gain respect and status and turned her into a Mary Sue

the problem with qi in this film is that that's not how qi works in real life, it's not some sort of special power. every single person has qi in them, qi does not descriminate. it's used mainly in medicine and martial arts. qi is the same in everyone, it's how the person channels and uses their qi that makes them powerful, and the person should be praised for their techniques not the qi itself.

I hated from the beginning (watching the trailer) that this Mulan had a totally different personality which nobody could identify with. The animation one was smart, but clumsy and VULNERABLE. She wasn't a super hero. She went through a process that required courage, ability and discipline. She won the battles thanks to the combination of her intelligence and strength that she got in the army. The actress looks so cold and bland, like she's a robot, not a person. And I don't understand why swapping characters, changing their names and personalities. What's the point? Nostalgic fans won't like it, new audiences won't care...So it makes absolutely no sense.

I was so sad about Shang being removed. In another review video, they said the idea to remove him came from the metoo movement. The creators thought it was inappropriate to have Shang form a relationship with Mulan because he was her commander. Thus in their eyes an unbalance power dynamic and he could take advantage and such.

Where they failed miserably. He never took advantage of her or treated her any different until her gender was revealed. Even then, he spared her life because he was in debt after her saving him. He cared about her but seemed like he didn't wanna admit it until towards the end.

Hell, they didn't even form a relationship till AFTER the war was over and he wasn't her commander anymore. It was dumb to remove him, and now they suffer cause of that change 😤.

Part of the thing with qi too is the fact that in the animated film Mulan’s strength was her intelligence. She didn’t climb the pole using brute force, she “cheated” it by realizing she could use the weights to work for her. She didn’t charge recklessly into battle, she used her brain and aimed at the mountain to cause an avalanche. Basically there are different kinds of strengths

live action movies should be love letters to the original movies, but they’re just nostalgia traps.

What’s really sad is that this film had SO much POTENTIAL and completely missed the ball.

If belle can have dancing furniture, Mulan can have a dragon-lizard and cricket 😤

Mulan 1998 : a trained soldier who does things men can do
Mulan 2020 : a gifted Wonder Woman wins all the way for no reason

I think they removed her relatability. In the original she wasn’t born with some kind of superhuman ability that she had to hide in order to pretend to be as weak as everyone else. She had to train hard and go through awkward situations and moments in order to become a good soldier.

In this new movie, she was more like a superhero. She just wasn’t relatable. I think the songs would’ve been amazing. I mean, imagine the choreography of “Make a Man Out if You” in a live version.

There was also something rushed about it and at the same time slow. The attempts at humor were corny and flat most of the time, and also came across as awkward( sometimes bizarre).
I don’t know, I think this movie had a lot of potential.

It also could have shown a relationship based on mutual respect and a real sense of equality, but it just kind of was very weird there too.

All in all, it didn’t really deliver for me.

Ignoring my dislike of how un-disney this film is,
I hate the new powers Mulan has. In the animated film, she was totally unprepared for the war. She really struggled to keep up because she was starting from nothing. But she worked hard, and she was smart. That's what I loved about her. She was determined to prove herself, and to fight for her country. Just like you said in the video, there are no stakes during the training. You don't get the huge payoff as she earns the respect of the soldiers.

Also I miss her -cow- horse

When Mulan ran away to join the army in place of her father,

Cartoon: no! My daughter! She’s gone! She could die!

New movie: ugh! Here she goes again! I’m so pissed

The reason I loved Mulan in the original is because she started off being unconfident and insecure when she she first joined the army but through hard work she grew confident and strong. In this one she starts of confident and strong- there’s no arc.
In the original I think she inspired a lot of young girls that even if your not very confident you can become strong.

Disney needs to learn that feminist characters aren’t impossibly strong ~girlbosses~, but realistically flawed women. Time and again they try to push “feminism” by making the protagonist nearly perfect (they did it with this and with beauty and the beast and maybe Cinderella, though I haven’t watched that in years) when really they’re just emphasizing the sentiment that women have to be perfect to be acceptable

I was disappointed. The supporting characters were bland and had no personalities and that disappointed me. It also wasn't as dark as the cartoon, so the stakes were lower because the villains seemed less threatening. Thank you for making this video! You spoke my mind. The witch made the main Bori Kong way less threatening.
