I apologize for the incoming rant but I won't be seeing this. They took away what made Mulan special for me. Giving her chi, making her all powerful from the beginning is terrible. The animated Mulan was clumsy and she had to work through it. She wasn't good at any of the fighting or skills like climbing but perseverance is what allowed her to achieve these things. It was that determination that uplifted everyone else's spirits and allowed them to achieve their goals to. She didn't beat the Huns by being a awesome fighter but by using her brains. Even her defeating the main villain was a result of brains over brawn. It's a core piece of her character and made her identifiable, someone that could be looked up to. Having her be "special" since the beginning takes away from what truly made her special. And it further pushes this mindset that women can't have flaws which is unhealthy. I don't think that's something so can look past to enjoy this movie when she is the the core of it.

This movie was made for the big screen. I wish it got released at a fortunate time, but I still do hope that it will get the attention and acclaim it deserves.

Legendary film actress Gong Li steals every scene she's in as a shapeshifting witch. That is the most positive thing I can say about this movie.

It's really unfortunate, disturbing, and quite frankly how many people are shitting on this movie (particularly on IMDb and rotten tomatoes). I thought the movie was fantastic! It differs itself enough from the original while also holding onto and evolving the key themes of family, self-confidence, etc. The themes, production, effects, music, and even the colors were so good. So many people seem to be upset that it's not "magical" and that Mulan is "too perfect" like wut?! 🙄

There is a reason for for no mushu, mushu is adragon and dragon is for the emperor so he was replace with the Phoenix for female.

Excellent movie. 10/10. I didn't agree about reviewers critic about pacing of movie. I thought Mulan's conversation and fight with witch was essential to story, becuz that's how her old hidden self died and her true self rose up. Thought it was great they broke the fight scene into 2 parts, rather than just fight fight fight. So totally disagree with the reviewers.

I was hugely disappointed it completely removes the core message of the original. In the animated version its about a normal girl who has to find the strength to save China through hardwork, force of will and intellect showing us all you can do anything that you put your mind to.... the new version: well if you don't have hidden magical powers you're worthless

I'm late to the party here, but I am a massive fan of Mulan (the legend, but also of both modern films by Disney). You were wondering in your review if the witch played by Li Gong appears in the original 'The Ballad of Mulan'. The answer is that she does not. However, there is a popular tome from 1675 called 'Historical Romance of the Sui and Tang' of which about 100 pages are devoted to the tale of Mulan, and which does include a similar character.

In this version, which contains many of the familiar story elements, there is also a powerful woman warrior character named Dou Xianniang who, at first, captures Mulan, but then comes to admire her and takes her on as a personal attendant. You'll note that Li Gong's character in the 2020 Disney film is also named Xianniang, so I'm certain that's what inspired her inclusion. This version of Mulan also has a very dour end, as Mulan returns home defeated, but pardoned, only to discover her father has died and the Khan wants to take her into his harem. Rather than submit, she commits suicide, but not before entrusting her sister with a mission to carry out disguised as a man. A bit of a passing of the mantle, I suppose.

Wouldn't Mulan's father have been sent back home right away? Since he is unfit for battle?

I really enjoyed myself watching this movie! The acting, action, CGI, visuals and sheer spectacle of the movie was amazing. I really enjoyed seeing this version of Mulan and I feel like this is one of the better live action remakes Disney has produced. The only complaints I have about the movie is that the editing was weird at times and the pacing could have been a little better in some scenes. I also loved the all Asian cast and the representation was amazing. Definitely deserved to be in the big screen and I wish I could have seen this in 3D or 4DX. It is what it is though and I still had fun. :)

I watch Mulan at the first day (9/4) twice in the theater ... and will go watch it with Chinese dubbing this Friday ~

Honestly...I love the movie! I watched it 4 times and picked up more details in the film then before. Has the same events as the original but more different twist which makes it more interesting to me. Before watching it, I have seen YouTube reviews of the movie and majority is negative but I wanted to see it for myself and not go on the negative reviews. Glad I watched it because adore this movie. Can't go on what everyone thinks, had to form my own opinion on the film.
