What’s the Difference Between Outlook, Outlook, and Outlook.com?

- Outlook is an email program you install on your computer and is part of Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365.
- Outlook for Windows is an email program that will apparently replace the default Mail and Calendar app in Windows 10 and 11 and is beginning to be rolled out in 2023. {{I added the date again to clarify.}}

I have Microsoft 365 which includes Office Outlook (which I like) but that looks as though it is being migrated to a new "Outlook" which the Windows Outlook is also being migrated to. My Office Outlook has option to "try the new Outlook". Excellent explanation which I will refer my friends to when they ask about "Outlook".

I'd argue this matches the challenges Microsoft has created with its OneNote versions for sheer idiocy in product management.

Be glad that all three Outlooks relate to mail. Even that is a somewhat surprising bit of good sense from Microsoft.

Agreed, Leo!! MS is such a big company with much to offer and yet when you Google an issue with "Outlook, " most of the time you get references to Office 365. I own Office 2019. MS goes out of their way to avoid helping me because I don't contribute to their Office 365 revenue stream. I'm dirt under their fingernails and God forbid they support me. It's if they are saying, "Look loser, you bought a one time offering of our program. You don't pay a monthly fee, so drop dead." Typical MS!

I didn't realize Microsoft had an email program (the one I am using) that wasn't Outlook. I have seen that message about Outlook replacing mail and calendar and was confused by it but just ignored it. Glad I caught your video!

What about Teams and Teams - the home one and the business one? Slightly different icons. And Microsoft account - Microsoft personal account, or Microsoft 365 business account.

Migrating email from a Win 8.1 laptop running Outlook 2103 to a win 11 laptop. I want to use REAL MS-Office Outlook, so I'm glad you clarified this before I started! When I searched on the Win 11 machine for Outlook, I saw the same thing you showed, and I GAVE UP. But you have greatly clarified things. I'm planning on EXPORTING the emails from Outlook 2013 and IMPORTING the emails into Win 11 MS-Office Outlook. I hope it goes well!

Thank you Leo for bringing this to light, so much confusion. But I guess that's the Microsoft way. This information has been very helpful and now I know the difference. Again thank you!

Thanks for the video and comparison. I'd add access to 'pst' files as a major difference between Office Outlook and Windows Outlook.

Thank you for the explanation! I use Microsoft Office Outlook and recently discovered about Microsoft Windows Outlook replacing Windows Mail & Calendar in 2024. Not sure what I want to do for the future as it is possible I could be changing to Unix on my PC the way Windows seems to be going to "pay to use" programs (i.e., 365) and maybe even changing to an Android Tablet as I'm getting older (I'm 68) and just don't need all the bells, whistles, and headaches in the future. Got any suggestions or maybe go more in depth with this on a new video for us Seniors?

Interesting that you list pop3 and imap4 as possible email protocols for office outlook (for which both office outlook is far from being ideal) but not the protocol it was made for: exchange and its eas protocol :-)

Anyways, the first one is usually called Office Outlook as you stated, that makes it clear then.
It was deinitely less confusing when the free windows client was called Outlook Express, i agree :)

Thank you. I'm not much of a commenter, nut I did find this very helpful trying to sort out all of my MS Office 365 structure that I'm setting up. This was very much appreciated.

I just had this confusion at work! We were using Gmail for our business but everyone decided to go with Outlook! When i opened Outlook it didn't look like anyone else's! What a pain! IT said"Well thats the wrong Outlook!" Why in the @#$$ would they have 3 with the same name? So confusing! Thanks for the Video!

I use a MacBook for work, and we use enterprise exchange accounts for out email. The Outlook program for MacOS used to be the Mac port of office outlook, but Microsoft has really been pushing for some time for people to use the new version of outlook, which you referred to as Windows Outlook. As far as I know it is not possible to run both at the same time, but it is possible to switch between them, by clicking an item on the File menu, to enable or disable “New Outlook”.

The new outlook is missing several features that are available in the old outlook, most importantly to me the ability to automate tasks with AppleScript.

This seems to go back to the days when we had Outlook and Outlook Express.

You did not mention the outlook app in iOS, which seems to refer to the Outlook website data

I have a 48v 40a power supply. I want to use it to power 4 KS0 Kaspa ASIC miners. The miners require 19v 6.32a approximately 120w. Should I use a buck converter for each KS0?

I am glad I found you! Thanks for the explanation. I can now say I am a Microsoft Office Outlook user. I have been using this version for a very long time for work and home with many contact categories. My wife always referred to it as “old” Outlook (like it went away or is going away). Question: Is there another Mail/contact program out there that you like better?

I've wondered this myself before, thanks for explaining!
