My review of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, a great backup drive!

Back in the 1990s I attended a talk on backups, the speaker's view was that there were only two kinds of people in this world, "Those who have lost data or those who going to !" I'm retired now from a career in IT but people are still losing data and as we create more thesedays, they are losing a lot more too.

An interesting review as ever from you and the 500Gb one seems a good idea in terms of price to performance but whilst you who have to travel will appreciate the speed plus the neccessity of backing up, it is unlikely to become a mass market product because most people won't have the same problems as you as a mobile reviewer where the speed shuttle between external device and laptop during editing really matters.

I have both a server and external hard drives (all mechanical) for backup and my desktop PCs all have internal SSDs however a cautionary note, when SSDs die, data recovery is not normally possible unlike mechanical drives. Am I saying SSDs are a bad thing ? Certainly not they are brilliantly fast but what it comes back to is that all of us need to protect our pictures and video by adopting good and regular backup practices that are appropriate to our situation because there is no old shoe box of negatives to resort to :)

Perhaps you could review now the V2 of the Extreme and Extreme Pro drives. Also explaining that the Pro versions have better Aluminium chassis for heat absorption and robustness.

Hot tip. Put some Velcro stickers on you ssd and your laptop and then you can securely attach the drive to your laptop and keeps everything neat.

You nailed the correct usage of such devices. Long ago I stopped opting for the "bigger internal storage" version of my laptops and desktops, rather using Thunderbolt, USB (before that, FireWire) and NAS to extend and expand the storage of my devices. The internal storage is almost exclusively just operating system and "working space".

A year later and just picked one up. Wow! So small and rugged feeling, so much faster than my current WD hard drive. I should have got one of these months ago.

I use the WD My Passport Wireless SSD because it has an SD slot.

Can you transfer files straight from camera to portable drive?
Down side SSDrives, once they fail they fail and the chip degrade over time. . With HDD it can be possible to extract lost files after its failed. Pros and cons for both.

Is there any way to just transfer images from the camera directly to the SanDisk Extreme SSD? Use a card reader? I don't usually take my laptop on vacation or remote shoots.

I have an older macbookpro and use a WD HDD for lightroom and photoshop, storing images on the WD and the catalog on my computer helped it work better but still slows down and heats up when using photoshop linked to lightroom. Do you think i could benefit from this SSD instead of HDD even if using older computer? Thanks
