Hurricane Milton: Forecast wind threat, heavy rain and storm surge
Показать описание
Milton grew to a Category 5 hurricane Monday morning. By Monday evening, Milton had sustained winds upwards of 180 mph.
The center of the storm is forecast to come ashore Wednesday evening into Thursday in the Tampa Bay region, which has not endured a direct hit by a major hurricane in more than a century.
According to KOMO Meteorologist Shannon O’Donnell, there are three big issues to worry about when it comes to these types of storms: the wind, the rain and the storm surge.
Milton’s forecast wind speeds are forecast to be over 155 mph surrounding the core of the storm moving into Wednesday.
Forecasters warned of a possible 8- to 12-foot storm surge in Tampa Bay.
That's the highest ever predicted for the region and nearly double the levels reached two weeks ago during Helene, said National Hurricane Center spokesperson Maria Torres.
The storm could also bring widespread flooding. Five to 10 inches of rain was forecast for mainland Florida and the Keys, with as much as 15 inches expected in some places.
