That's where my dad was at and he was the Army Air corps so he was were the airstrip was at so he was fighting to keep the air strip it's nice to hear this story about that.

My father was on Iwo Jima and in the Mariana Islands in World War II. He kept a diary, which I have now, was illegal. And lots of photographs that look like something from National Geographic and let that point be They were very graphic pictures. Thank you Veterans for your service. My son in law served 18 years in the Marines. At MSgt he died, in 2020 of Sarcoma Cancer, leaving my daughter a widow and 3 heartbroken children. Patrick we know you've "Gone fish'n" and we will see you again sweetheart. Meet you in the clouds with Jesus. ❤🙏💙

Closest airstrip to Japan for crippled bombers to use coming back from runs to the home islands. That was the whole point of taking Iwo back from the enemy: they used it to initially supply the island for defensive purposes when they dug in.
