When I asked my father, why he enlisted in the Marine Corps for Vietnam instead of the navy or army, he gave me an answer that was 100% my father. He said “even though I was not eligible for the draft, I wanted to do my part, and I wanted to be with the best possible branch.“. When he came home, he became a CPA, but maintained his Marine Corps discipline throughout his entire life. He died last year. I was always so proud of my Dad no matter what he did.

I was never in the military. The main difference I noticed is that most if not all of the former Marines I met never shed that disciplined lifestyle. They can be all drunk and wasted the night before, but will show up 10 minutes early for work the very next day. Never seen any of them complain or gossip at work. They are doers for sure

When my son decided to enlist, he chose the marine corps. I asked him why he didn't want to be an airman like dad, to which he responded " I want the title of being called a marine. No offense dad, but nobody cares if you were an airman 😂!! " He had a point, and he went on to become a US marine and served honorably for five years. Proud to call him my marine son

As an army veteran, I had friends who were marines, yes we bumped heads like a deep sibling rivalry, but there is a deep level of respect.

The differences I observed in eight years of active duty as an OIF and OEF combat vet:
Marines maintain higher individual standards, especially discipline and fitness in their support units. Army has better funding, more specialized units, and get promoted faster in combat arms at least.

As a soldier whose best friends with several marines, I’d say there’s a dramatic difference in standards between our support personnel and in our initial entry training, but among actual line units not as much. And the quality of life is better in the army.

Spent 27 years in the military, starting with the Marine Corps (mos 0313) as a Private and retiring from the Army as a CW4 in the Cyber branch, from my experience, the average Marine is more motivated and self-disciplined. There are more career options in the Army. People who join the Marines typically want the adventure, while people in the Army are more likely to want the benefits.

I’m an Army veteran & am partial to the Army of course but respect all if our branches. We’re all brothers & sisters in arms. The Army & Marines are the tip of the spear & the biggest & baddest ground forces but we need our ships & sailors, & need our air force. I was a tanker & as impressive as the Abrams is it can’t do anything without ammo, fuel, chow & supplies. Every soldier matters from enlisted to officers & from sailor to army soldier to marine to airman. If you serve, you sacrifice & are doing something for the greater good. RIP to all those that have fallen. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thanks to all those that proudly wear the uniform.🫡

I was Army. We're on the same side, bleed the same and chew the same dirt.

The difference is one eats MRE'S in the field. The other eats Crayons.

If you are in the USMC and decide switch to another service, you can do so without attending their boot. However, if you wish to transfer to the USMC from another service, you need to attend USMC boot.

I wanted to join the Marines my senior year of high school, but I was told no because of my immigration status.
I then went to the navy and air force because I thought they might give me a chance, but was also told no.

Now i kinda wanna work as a first responder/EMS.

As an Army guy, I was always struck by the intensity of the Marines I sometimes worked with. They were very proud, dedicated and disciplined, and they thought they were better than us (I thought they were crazy!).

But, I understood that it takes a special kind of person who will run willingly (and happily) into battle, and I was very grateful for them. Ooorah my Marine brothers!!

I was apart of the 26th MEU in 2003. We took the city of Mosul at the outbreak of the Iraq war. A few weeks later, the 101st Army showed up to relieve us. I was a tad upset, and asked my LT why the F-ing Army was here?! He said "Marines gain the foothold. Amy occupies. We're needed elsewhere." Best example of our differences right there.
