Hidden inflammation is at the root of all chronic illness—conditions like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, and cancer. So if inflammation is at the root of most modern diseases, how do we find the causes and get the body back in balance?

Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Dr. Shilpa Ravella about what is driving our epidemic of inflammation and inflammaging, why it plagues so many people, and what we can do to combat it.

Dr. Ravella is a gastroenterologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. She is the author of A Silent Fire: The Story of Inflammation, Diet & Disease, which investigates inflammation—the hidden force at the heart of modern disease. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, New York Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, TIME, Slate, Discover, and USA Today, among other publications.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, Sensate, and Zero Acre.

It's always amazed me that gastroenterologist never asked you what do you eat? Or let's do food sensitivity test? Or let's do a stool sample. Usually it's just dispense medication. Someone needs to teach them the connection between food, gut and inflammation. But thank you for this informative video

I'm an African woman in my sixties, no health issues.
My take on my every day diet is, if my grandma had no name or an African name for a particular food, I'm not eating THAT.
I Love Dr Hyman, he's one of the best doctors & human beings out there. Great informative episode as always ✨💞

Thank you Dr. Hyman…your teachings are life and much easier to do than modern medicine. I am no longer inflamed: no allergies, hives, hot flashes, hair loss, sensitive teeth, sore throats, etc. and I lost 30 pounds. This happened in 30 days of illuminating inflammatory foods: dairy, flour, sugar and processed foods.

Thank you 🙏🏽

A few weeks ago I bough some common Mayo, and some common salad dressings - This is a true and rare event for me. Man, did I ever get sick. For decades I have been only using EV Olive Oil, Ghee(Dairy), Coconut Oil and Butter. As well for a few years now I have been only using 100% Grass Fed Butter.

*I can attest to this entire amazing interview!* The _stress_ of my dog's illness and death over a period of 2 years is what wrecked my gut microbiome to the point that I developed severe asthmatic histamine intolerance. The repair process included a multi-prong approach including everything this interview enumerated. Stress modulation, *fasting, * clean nutritious omnivorous food, fiber, hydration, and above all _mindfulness_ with respect to my gut and overall wellbeing. *It took 5 months to go from having a near-anaphylaxis asthmatic response to essentially **_all_** food to NO INAPPROPRIATE IMMUNE RESPONSE AT ALL.*

I cannot wear polyester, I have sensitivity to plastic and strong fragrances. I can only use eco friendly cleaning products. I have developed fibromyalgia, depression and anxiety due to stress from having to deal with a mother with all the traits of narcissistic personality disorder. I try to manage my conditions with diet and exercise.

I get the opposite to the stress related to the lonely response. I get inflammation from just being around people and my main management to reduce this response is to be lonely!

Toxins affects your stress level. With toxins exposure you can get a high stress level even without outside stimulates, even without any events to trigger stress. You will start stressing out about things you don’t normally stress out about. Then in turn this increase stress will increase the effects of the toxins in your body.

But the gut bacteria, foods, sunlight and exercise can help you control it. Bad foods can increase your stress level while foods with high nutrients will lower stress. But ppl needs to realize that you can be stress even without any life altering event and to take actions like diet change to lower that stress cause it can cause damage to your body especially your gut.

Kale is high in glucosinolates and goitrogens aka anti-nutrients. Many seem to advise against its consumption, let alone highlighting it as a 'superfood'.

When I had allergy tests done with needle pricks 30 years ago, (20 on each arm) I was told my immune system would shut down if I reacted to too many at once.

I did this on two consecutive Fridays. The first Friday, no problem on Saturday. The second Friday after the test, I felt like a Mack truck hit me and couldn’t get out of bed! All kinds of body aches!!
