I ate a whole foods, plant-based diet for 30 years before I developed hypothyroidism. I believe in my case the cause was genetic. It is widespread in my extended family.

I took Armour thyroid for years before I heard this. I was under the impression that the Synthroid was incomplete. I had no end of diagnosed problems with amounts. Seems my thyroid was getting worse and worse... Now, with the Synthroid, I've been stable for some time at a considerable small‐ish dose. Thanks for the video. It's a good bit of information. Btw... you look wonderful. So good to see a man grow older, and stay healthy, after having a massive stroke at 18. Don't think it would have been as good without the Starch Solution eating plan and lifestyle. Glad you're here.

Thank you Doctor McDougall. I healed my 22 year old Hypothyroidism by going plant based after watching the documentary What The Health. I discussed with my doctor and stopped taking my medication. I started a plant based Whole Foods diet recommended by Dr Esselstyn. I also take 12.5 mg of Iodine and Sea Moss everyday. My hair stopped failing, I can work out with no issues, feel the best ever. Is has been 3 years and going strong. Hopefully my story can help others 🙌

If there was ever a saint-hood for medical doctors I would choose Dr. John McDougall above any other doctor I know of. I just can’t express enough how grateful I am for him but I will keep trying. The definition of saint hood I use here is that of one who fully obeys and promulgates the adherence of
the right diet for human beings.

Just got diagnosed and this video makes me feel a little better, I'll try to avoid animal foods as much as I can. RIP Dr. McDougall, your work has been priceless to the world.

10 years ago I was diagnosed as hypo but not terribly so. I tried levothyroxin. It worked but I was so close to normal even before I just stopped taking the pills. I live in an area known for thyroid disease. Being a life long vegetarian and 7 years plant based, I started using reverse osmosis water. After a year of reverse osmosis water and my healthy diet my thyroid was normal. I do take bladderwack for iodine. But be aware of water systems having chemicals that affect the thyroid.

I've been a vegan for 7 years. After the second year my thyroid became swollen and sore. I guessed i needed iodine and started taking 6 drops of iodine each day. I've been doing this for years and have not had a problem.

The solution to many health problems is so simple... It's so sad that it's not accepted by society as a whole.

I was able to completely heal my Hashimoto's hypothyroid with a vegan diet (also gluten and soy free). I had hypothyroid for over 20 years and was on medication. About 7 years ago I decided to try to heal myself with diet. It took a long time, but my thyroid is finally totally healthy and normal and all lab values are normal. You can heal your thyroid!!!

Enjoyed hearing this talk about the thyroid… Would love to hear more about what the thyroid does in our body… How we might feel if it’s off and either direction. With infinite love and gratitude for all you share!!

I was diagnosed with hashimottos in 2017 and asked the doctor 4 months to clean up my vegan diet before I started on synthroid. Went back and my levels went back to normal. Had to keep going back every 4 months for 2 years. Still normal. Now I only go once a year and never had to take the medicine. I don’t know if you can reverse it but at least for me I can keep it at bay.

Dr. John Mcdougall rules! I'm still on whole food-plant based. I'm thankful I don't have any disease or illness, and it's partly due to the food, and being careful, but of course part is luck. I looked at the price of a cholesterol blood test and thought better about it: there is no way my cholesterol will go up again as long as I am strict on the diet. I can still check my blood pressure.

I trust and admire your advice on all things having to do with diet! While I see the logic in your video, I wonder if I've been dealt a different deck of genetic cards. I've been strictly whole foods, plant-based only since 2013, and developed Hashimoto's during the last 4-5 years. I'm now 60 y.o. and have never been a big hot dog eater and rarely ate sausage prior to 2013. FWIW, my endocrinologist said I can't take Synthroid YET, since my thyroid is still working and that would be the worst thing for me. Coincidentally I'm also post-menopausal these last 6 years. In addition to weight gain (30ish + lbs) over these past 5 years, I also am fatigued and have super slow heart rate I haven't earned like my friends who are super athletic. (Pulse commonly dips into the 40s at night). My autoimmune numbers have been super high so I'm not sure what's causing it. Daughter dx with T1 diabetes at age 20. Another daughter also dx w/ Hashimoto's and most sisters and mother have thyroid issues too. Aaarrrghh.

Idk. I have been totally vegan for 7 years and was diagnosed with hypothyroid last fall and had to start thyroid supplementation.

THANK YOU for this. I've been trying to get a definitive answer on this and have seen conflicting information on diet helping heal the thyroid. Now I know. AND, you have put me at ease about taking a medication for treatment of hypothyroidism if I get put on it (currently borderline hypothyroid and will be having my levels rechecked in a couple months). Thank you!

Anecdotal, but for what it’s worth, I would always get irregular thyroid tests until I went veg.
