Ned should have taken the book offer, which did not include Lord Renly offering himself as King in the package lol! The show offer was easily and understandably denied because Renly suggested that he be crowned. But overall the reasoning was the same… “I don’t want to shed blood in his halls in Roberts last hours, and drag frightened children from their beds…” ironically for Ned one of those “frightened children” took his head just a few days later…

What’s funny is that this isn’t even a dishonest thing to do, it’s just smart. And I’m sorry but Ned is a fucking idiot for not thinking this way, the throne was just left vacated by his friend who quite literally just bled to death. Why in old gods green earth would Ned think “let me do absolutely nothing to secure my own safety of me and my children while I’m here.” Renly didn’t say kill anyone, he said you need men at arms to take Cersei’s only power away which is her children. You take that away and even Tywin can’t do anything about it because you were named protector of the realm and Tywin can’t murder you in the middle of the red keep with everyone watching when he’s not even on the small council.
