At least the boy remembers the story behind everything

This is that blend of adorable and creepy, where I honestly hope he finds a way to keep these reminders❤

I'm so afraid I'm gonna get to a point where I'm this bad. I am very sentimental and I have trouble getting rid of stuff lmao.

This was me until a friend I have a lot of respect for told me to stop hoarding trash. She came and helped me clean. And it really was a case of keeping trash. Like candy wrappers I felt were significant, pieces of junk I found on the ground and "felt bad for". Strings and bottle caps and toilet paper rolls I thought were going to be super useful one day and thought I'd regret throwing it away. And she didn't call me bad for keeping this nonsense, she just said that she likes that I'm sentimental but that I deserve better.

I'm still a packrat but now I collect books, candles, and antique ornaments. And they are lovely to look at and bring me much joy.

As a hoarder myself, I could honestly say that a situation like this would (and has) send me into a full blown panic attack. Years of therapy and we are just getting to the origins of it all, and how to prevent it. A few years ago I was able to get rid of 3 full trash bags of stuffed animals that made it impossible for me to sleep on my own bed. I do still have mini freak outs on not finding things and have had times where my mother gave me this kind of ultimatum. But through it all, I have gotten rid of 4 doom bins, and am slowly working through my room. Trust me y’all, it gets better! And don’t ever try to do it on your own, ask for help as much as you can, even over the little stuff. Don’t ever feel embarrassed for asking for help.

I understand being sentimental, but it can reach a point where you have run out of room to make new memories.

One of the best coping skills (for me personally) is taking pictures of the items, and keeping the images in a safe place. It helps you see the item and remember the memories attached to it without cluttering up your space.

I hope y’all find your own way out of this, and have a great rest of your day!

Edit: Hello again! Sorry for making this comment even longer lol, but I would just like to to mention, a couple months after I posted this comment, I got an OCD diagnosis as some of you have mentioned. To specifically tackle my hoarding, I went to an OCD specific treatment center, and for three months I was in this program (1/2 in Partial Hospitalization, 1/2 intensive outpatient). While I was very proud of these achievements when I made this comment, I just wanted to update and thank everyone for their support! I am currently in a depressive spiral from medication withdrawal, so my room is very much a hoarder room, but the spaces I worked on during program are still practically clean! I work with my out patient therapist every week to work on goals and plans for my room.

I just wanted people to know, that there will always be people to help. And if you are struggling with hoarding disorder too, and you have access to more professional help, I highly recommend it. It’s going to suck yes, but you will have skills, and you can make it through. I hope you all are having a lovely 2025, I believe in you, and I am always here to help the best I can.

Oh, and I found some of the comments talking about the taking a picture thing funny cause it’s so fr. During my stay at program, I was actually made to delete tabs on my phone, unnecessary screenshots and apps. I do currently have 50k photos (not of all the things I’ve owned, and 30k are screenshots 💀) so if you have similar ocd, I’d recommend not using the photo method. That’s all lol ❤️

I find that taking photos of memoria and organizing them into folders helps. You still get to keep the memory but you get rid of the stuff

Keep your sentimental treasures, I’m going to start scrapbooking the things that are important to me and place some objects in some light/shadow boxes. Because of homelessness in my youth I’ve lost so many things with sentimental value, organizing is important but memories are great too. Also take the time to write down or type out the important moments in your life, even if it seems mundane. These things will help your family and descendants remember you for a long time. I wish I had knew more about my grandmother before she passed but alas

After experiencing three floods, wiped out most of everything that my family owned, we learn to not be attached to stuff 😅

I think its sweet he kept his brother's first hair cut. It shows how proud and how much he cares🥺🥺

It’s so sweet though that he kept stuff that was sentimental to him because of his brothers.

Move out for a year without taking any of that stuff with you, and suddenly it becomes a lot easier to figure out what you can and can't part with.

This is so me. I just can't seem so throw away stuff. It has precious memories.

As someone with a hoarding disorder, I felt this. It’s so hard to get rid of even the littlest things, plus the backstory is always good to look back on when you have the object.

As a kid that just finished this school year and that has an envelope full of notes and another envelope full of test and paper achievement certificates with infos of my friends that we did for a project.✨ Definitely a sentimental and easily attached person. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
I relate to this to a whole another level.
Who's with me guys? (・∀・)

as a hoarder, this is so relatable and also kind of sad tbh
i've started forcing myself to get rid of things i truly don't need once a year a few years ago and it's so hard and takes me multiple days to do but it's better than living in an apartment filled with actual trash that "holds sentimental value"
