Very interesting experiment, especially the findings that any rippage is going to change how the load is distributed. It would seem during a rip, a significant amount of wedgie force would get distributed around the elastic band to connecting fabric, instead of the fabric directly in the crack, and relieving the wedge pressure. So, in order to get maximum wedge, one must make sure not to destroy the fabric in the process. A great physics lesson for the children.
