Thank you for this. I just bought an HRX217HYA today and plan on following all your "make it last a lifetime" tips. I'm 54 and this better damn well be the last lawnmower I ever have to buy.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to explain this to customers and reps and sales people, but here it is in hopes it will help alleviate the stress levels some of you are experiencing: The oil in your new engine is turning dark because carbon and unburned petroleum components are blowing past the piston rings and down into the crankcase. The rings haven’t formed and finalized their wear pattern yet, (known as “seating”). These contaminants are soft and pose no threat to the engine. Also, using non- ethanol gasoline actually contributes to the harmless oil darkening as it lacks the chemicals which promote a cleaner combustion burn. The metal particles are also completely harmless as long as you maintain the correct oil level for your engine and do not operate it at an extreme angle to it’s center axis design, particularly so if it’s a non-pressurized oiling system. These metal particles are of the exact same hardness as the metal components they are shed from, meaning they do not posses any greater abrasive qualities, and further more are suspended in and completely surrounded by lubricant. Prematurely changing the initial oil in a brand new or overhauled engine will only prolong the break in period, and in worse case scenario will prevent the piston rings from fully seating to design specifications. The results of course are reduced compression values and higher than normal oil consumption, leading to reduced power and shorter life span of the engine. I do not recommend synthetic oils in these small engines; Today’s manufacturing processes yield extremely durable surfaces and require nothing more than the recommended viscosity mineral / petroleum based oil. It is only under very extreme operating temperatures, engine load values, and oil change intervals that I would consider synthetic oil. Hopefully this will ease your minds the next time you grab the pull cord.

My previous Honda mower lasted over 21 years on the first oil fill. Never changed it. Not once. It's just a mower. The engine was still running fine. Only replaced the mower because the deck was rusting out, self drive was wearing out and the plastic fuel tank developed a leak.

I just changed my Honda engine oil after 10 years. Gave it a new blade, spark plug, and filter while I was at it. It runs as smooth as your new engine and doesn't burn oil or leak it. I'll be good for another 10 years before I need to change it again. Go team Honda!!! 🤗😘😉

I purchased a Honda HRX217 last summer and did the initial break in for 25 minutes then changed the oil. The oil was as dark as in your video and I changed it again after about 1 hour of use as it was a little grey. After that, the oil remained clear for the rest of the summer. That tells me that my engine does not lose anymore metal due to friction. So THE INITIAL BREAK IN IS A MUST and I know it will run for many years like new. Thanks to YOU!

Took your advice. I just bought a new hrc216hxa. Used amsoil 10w30 for small engines. Started and let run for 30 minutes. Drained it into a clear glass jar and it was close to black. Oh, and no starter bottle of oil (cheapskates). Also the manual for the hrc said 1st oil change after 20 hours. Glad I listened to you!!

thank you. i followed your suggestion to change the oil after 30 min on my bran new mower. you were right, there were quite a few flakes of metal in that oil and it was darker than oil should be for 30 min of run time.

Great advice jb!
I can’t imagine how many ppl buy a mower and just fill it up w oil and don’t even change it at the 5 hour mark.
This serves as a good reminder

I run Walmart Supertech Full Synthetic 10w30 in my Honda mower, Yamaha generator & Tractor Supply Kohler engine log splitter. I usually mow my yard once with a new mower then change out that dirty metal dust oil. Mine all run great with ethanol free gas. Good video.

Good to see people still use this practices. A bought the Honda HRX 217 a few days and changed the oil after a 30 minutes of use.

I’ve owned a toro recycler for the last 10-12 years and the deck started rusting out. I’ll be buying my 1st Honda this week, thanks for the informative video I plan on breaking it in right

I always go an hour then change. I wanna give the rings time to seat well before I do the 1st change. Me being the overachiever that i am, i change oil every 20hrs on my small engines. I have my new Honda HRX217 arriving today to replace the Snapper ive been using the past 10yrs. Very anxious to mow that first patch of grass with a new machine!!! Dad mode level to brag about!! May even polish up my New Balance shoes & give the khakis a nice press while we wait

I got a HRN216VKA yesterday to replace my craftsman mower that died. I never owned a self-prepared mower before so i wanted to see what other people's experiences were. Glad I found this video. I did the initial fill of oil, ran for 20 min then drained it. The oil was defiantly blackened, and there was "stuff" in it, but i didn't have any clear containers to inspect the used oil.

The only other thing i would add to this video @215 would be to use a fuel stabilizer with the gasoline you have "sitting" in a storage can.

My Briggs and stratton recommend 5 hour break in, I already had 2 hrs. Break in, then watch your video and did a oil change and it was sparkle from metal, change the oil ( sticking with Briggs and stratton SAE 30w).
Thanks for the video:)

Bought one of these recently and can confirm that it indeed started on the first pull. I ran it for about 45 minutes and then changed the oil. It did not look as dark as the one in this video, but it was glittery.

1 year old and your saving lawnmowers across the world, thanks for the heads up…. The oil was nasty after the first run.

I totally agree about the initial oil change of 5 hours being way too long. I actually changed the oil after 15 mins no-load, then changed it again after 30 minutes intermittent load, (oil was just as dirty), then ran it for 5 hours in service (oil was slightly less dirty), then changed it every 50 hours or sooner depending on service conditions.
