Learn how to avoid foot pain in the arch of the foot in this Howcast video about foot care.
Hi, my name is Dr. John Fritz, and I'm going to talk to you a little bit today about one of the more common causes of arch pain.
One of the most common causes of arch pain is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band on the bottom of your foot. Plantar fasciitis is very common and is caused by excessive tension being placed on the plantar fascia.
There are quite a few factors that can cause excessive tension on plantar fascia. One is improper stretching when you're exercising, changing your routine when you're exercising.
One of the most common causes of arch pain that I see is usually around the new year when people get back into their exercise routine. Hitting a treadmill on the highest possible incline is not a great idea.
Some other causes of arch pain would be people who have flat feet or who are basically overpronators, which puts more stress on the arch area. Individuals who are obese also tend to put a little bit more pressure on the arch, resulting in pain.
Some things that you can do to improve arch pain would be wear proper shoes, wear over-the-counter innersoles. If pain persists, see your podiatrist and they can do therapy, stretching exercises, and fabricate custom made orthotic devices for you.
