Diplomatic recognition for Taiwan would be a good start.

The irony is China would be North Korea if not for western trade. And they will be if they ever get the world the way they want it.

if mainland china is a threat why would the US allow them to buy properties or be in the stock market in the US or in UK?

What a simpleton; hard power should be used as a last resort, what the US needs to do is build an alliance with all the other western countries and reduce the amount of goods they buy from China. We can get these goods elsewhere, and using economic pressure we can force China to do whatever we want; have elections, independent judiciary, bill of rights, etc. etc.

What exactly is the threat? What happened to cooperation and diplomacy? China and America together could accomplish a lot, but no one even wants to try. Russia is the belligerent, impossible nation. China seems reasonable, but unwilling to be patronized or placated. So treat them with respect as an equal. It might be that simple.

As an American, I'm obviously largely fine with the U.S. pushing its idea's to the lead in regards to formulating policy with its allies and partners...EXCEPT when it's England and (to a very, very slightly smaller extent) Australia. I can't say as to why, but there's a part of me that gets a bit nervous when thinking of the U.S. going fully against any misgivings England may have on any major issue. The U.S. is an insanely powerful nation, and as of today, it's basically uncontested. No matter who it is, that COULD be a dangerous thing to the rest of the world. Someone has to be able to whisper in our ear from time to time...

Such a relief that a powerful Republican congressman backs U.S. policy in Ukraine, Russia and China.

[3:34} Which is why, if the Chinese attack Taiwan, the counter-offensive will begin in the landfall of Beijing and Shanghai, not the south China sea :-)
