Members of the Chinese Communist Party are set to converge in Beijing in the latter half of 2022 for their 20th national party congress. Such gatherings take place about once every five years, but the upcoming congress is expected to be the most significant political event for China in decades. It will be the first to take place since major geopolitical events, including the US-China fall out, the Covid-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine and the latest Taiwan crisis. But what is a party congress and why is the once-in-five-year event significant for the future of China?

Countries such as the US obviously prioritise civil rights, where china’s socialist mindset is prioritising the basic living rights such as health and shelter for all. A correction. Xi is on par with Mao, not Deng. Deng was not elevated in the same way and his ideas are formally recognized as "theory" not "thought" like Mao and now Xi.
