Want to file a complaint with the attorney General’s Office? Here’s how!:

For years I’ve told the salesman to tell finance that I want zero discussion about extras or add on’s. IF finance goes down that road, I walk. Period. I expect to be in and out of finance in 15 minutes or less or I walk. This has worked perfectly for me on my last 6 car/truck purchases. I also tell the salesman that I want zero dealership branding on my vehicle when I pick it up. No stickers, license plate frames, branded mud flaps, etc. I’m not going to be a rolling billboard for your dealership. This has worked every time as well.

Some years ago, 2017 I think, my son was buying his first New Car. Deal was made, he and his mother in the financial office. The finance guy was a real stiff dude, trying to push stuff on the deal, son and his mom trying to negotiate the add ons. Finance guy said, “I don’t have all day to get this done, other buyers are waiting!”
At that, my son and his mom stood up, and said, “well, they don’t have to wait any longer”, and they walked out.

It’s really frustrating how you need to have a lawyer and a mechanic just to buy a car.

I did this. I was at finance had signed 80 percent of the papers. They asked me to sign for the theft protection. I said I don’t want that. They said it’s already installed and can’t take it off. I said then you have to pay for it. They refused. I said that’s ridiculous but wouldn’t budge. I stood up picked up all of the papers and started to tear all of them and asked them to delete all of my information. Suddenly they were able to remove the theft protection.

True story, my wife and I went with our daughter to buy her first car in 2020. A 2019 Civic with 13000 miles. After 6 plus hours of negotiations we made it to the finance office where we discovered over 4K of added crap in the contract. On his desk he had pictures of his wife and daughter (about 6/7 years old) and vacation photos. I commented on the photos and asked if that was his wife and daughter to which he replied “yes”. I then said “ as a father I am here to make sure my child gets a good, safe and reliable vehicle for an affordable price. In about 10 years you’ll be sitting where I am and undoubtedly will be guiding your own daughter to decline all this unnecessary add-ons as your primary duty as a father is to lookout for your child’s best interest. What kind of a father would I be if I allow this?” The man looked at me for a few seconds, took a deep breath and asked for the contract back which I had been looking at. He re-wrote the contract for exactly the price we agreed in the beginning plus tax, tag and tittle.

The last car I brought from a stealership I had already pre-negotiated the price via email and I had a record of it. I drove over an hour to the dealership which was several towns away and when I went in to the finance office the vehicle was $100 more than I had negotiated. I went through every line item I wasn't charged anymore for anything it was just $100 more. So now the salesman is completely MIA and I'm dealing with this young kid in a cheap tie who's angry that he has to go back and reprint everything. He literally said to me "it's only a hundred bucks." So I very kindly replied, "give me a hundred bucks and you don't have to go back and redo the paperwork."

Needless to say that hundred bucks was much more valuable when it was coming out of his pocket. I didn't walk out. I made them go redo the paperwork and get it to the correct price.

I walked out of a dealership in Miami when I was told that there was a $1, 000 fee for interior cleaning and protection that was required by the manufacturer to help prevent transmission of COVID-19. When I asked if this product was applied by the manufacturer, they answered "yes." When I asked why this wasn't included in the MSRP, they knew they'd been caught in a lie. Basically they were charging $1, 000 for a $10 spray bottle of ScotchGuard and another $10 spray bottle of Microban.

Once in the Finance Office, I always say the same thing... "I'M GOING TO SAY NO TO EVERYTHING. SO LET'S SIGN OFF ON CAR ONLY."

The fact that all this has to be dealt with is another reason that car dealerships are a out of date way of doing business.

I was almost a Napleton customer. I negotiated a price on a Ford Expedition and told the manager and salesman several times DO NOT RUN MY CREDIT. I was approved by our credit union and did not want another hard inquiry. The salesman gave me a form to fill out and I said "this sure looks like a credit app!" He assured me that it was not a credit app, but rather a required form ever since 9/11/01 for security purposes. After I complied and filled it out, he took it to his F&I manager and they ran my credit!! I told him he could keep his Expedition! I reported them to the BBB.

The scariest part that nobody talks about is that the Cox family owns The Auctions that sell to dealers KBB, who tells the banks what they can lend on the vehicle, and they also own Auto Trader, which gives consumers a guide to Fair market value. That's a total criminal monopoly.

I had a deal "blow up" in the finance office in the mid 90s because finance guy wouldn't take NO as an answer when offering an extended warranty. Told him I wasn't going to waste any more time if he wasn't going to listen to me. Manager said they couldn't find keys to my trade in and I ended up having to call police. Once officer showed up, keys to trade in magically appeared so I could leave. Manager actually called me at home that night (I know don't give them home number) trying to save deal and to be honest I used language with him that would have made a sailor blush.

I was trying to buy a 2 yr old Honda Civic back in 2016 that was advertised on internet. I didn’t know any of these techniques. I just only had a certain amount of money and had a pre approval from my credit union. When they kept adding things, I kept getting up to leave because I couldn’t afford extra. So they agreed to advertised price.

In finance office they talked about the extras and I said, take them off because I can’t afford those. Then they talked about the extended warranty and that as a woman, you don’t want to worry about breaking down in dark parking lot. I then asked them why they thought the car was so unreliable. I had Hondas for years and didn’t worry about that.

It took a whole day but I got my deal and didn’t pay for add-ons. And it’s because I only had so much money for it. They really wasted my time.

I bought a used 2015 kia rio that they said went through a 30 point inspection. When I got home the AC stopped working. I took it back to them. They fixed it and charged me $254. I told the Attorney General's office about this and within 2 days I got a FEDEX overnight letter with a check for $254 in it from the dealership.

After 22 years in the car business selling mostly used cars ( thank goodness ) up to owning my own Buy Here Pay Here. I must say that I don’t miss one thing about it. This was a good basic and to the point video to help folks advocate for themselves. Another thing to remember is don’t allow yourself to be drug along for 3-6 hours. It doesn’t take that long to do a deal.

What I do is simple: what is the out the door price with no add ons: PERIOD. I also get quotes from a bunch of places before I even step foot into a dealership. If you’re easily pushed around, bring a friend with you and tell that friend that you are not allowed to say yes to anything, but the price you determined before you went in, and you’re not allowed to say yes to any add-ons at all bring a friend who is strong-willed, and that won’t let you get bamboozled.

Even if they took the extras off I would feel like they tried to cheat me and wouldn't feel much trust going forward.

I love destroying them in finance. Throwing keys back to them and getting up, keep ur phone out and run ALL the numbers and taxes. Decline it all! Their maintenance programs, warranty, vin etching, ceramic protection etc. I work for a dealership also.

We just purchased a previously owned 2015 Durango yesterday and went through the whole "add on" thing. I knew they were adding something to the price before we got to the finance office, but figured it could be dealt with there. I hadn't signed anything yet, and they didn't have any of my money yet. Sure enough when the time came to sign everything there was "Etch" for $599, "Tire/rim" $599, and some baloney they called "Aftersales" for $399 which was some key fob warranty. I started politely by asking what all that was and was told "Everyone vehicle gets that, it's mandatory". I escalated a little and quite firmly told him to remove that bullshit fluff from this deal or they could keep the damn vehicle. the finance guy backed off immediately, tore everything up and re-did it without the bullshit. Saved $1600 plus the interest on that...
