Chapter 17 Lecture Video Part 2
Section 17.8 Oxidation of Aldehydes: Review methods of oxidizing aldehydes. Discuss Tollen's reagent to selectively oxidize aldehydes to carboxylic acids.
Section 17.9 Organometallic Reagents: Introduction to organolithium reagents, Grignard reagents, and organocuprates. Know the method for preparing each type of organometallic reagent. Know the reaction between organometallic reagents and compounds with an OH gourp.
Section 17.10 Reaction of Organometallic Reagents with Aldehydes and Ketones: Predict the product of organometallic reagents with aldehydes and ketones.
Section 17.11 Retrosynthetic Analysis of Grignard Products: Use retrosynthetic analysis to determine what carbonyl compound and Grignard reagent (or organolithium reagent) can be used to produce a given alcohol.
Section 17.12 Protecting Groups: Know how to use a silyl ether to protect alcohols from organometallic reagents. Know how to deprotect silyl ethers.
These are the lectures that I use in my Organic Chemistry II course. The textbook I use is Smith, Janice "Organic Chemistry", McGraw Hill, 6th Ed., 2020, ISBN13: 9781260119107. Some images used in this video come from that textbook.
