6g Pipe Welding Test Monster Coupon 7018

This video is about the stick welding portion of the 6g welding test with a monster coupon.
I worked with instructor Kyle Lockwood -GA trade school.
I tried to show different body positions and methods because there are many ways to go about a 6g stick welding test.
The monster coupon is becoming more and more popular with welding employers because it provides a broader range of welding qualifications than most other standard wall thickness 6g pipe welding tests.

Small tip: before taking ANY welding test always change out your clear lenses to fresh ones. It makes a huge difference, at least for me 😁

The best advice I can give on the stick is: use 3/32 less porosity, don’t weave your stringers, stagger your start n stops, and before you start find your destination welding finish point and then bend your body as far as you can comfortably to start and you should resurface to you finish point... everybody has there on techniques that’s the beauty of welding

Thank you Jodi I'm going to be taking this test next week at the Bruce Nuclear Plant up here in New York Kincardine Ontario Canada! I've been training welders for years and now I'm back out of retirement going to do the monster take all the way one day and then the next day TIG and stick finishing up the second test on the second day I hope all goes well! I have a daughter who's interested in welding I've already trained one of my six daughters nine years ago at Lambton College in Sarnia Ontario Canada and she passed the F3 F4 6G weld test and all position CWB plate test with me in one year and never had welded before! And when I asked her how did you do so well Kara she said Dad I just did what you showed me to do! Thanks again you are so awesome keep up the great work and I hope that the good Lord above keeps you well and safe through this pandemic!

Like one of my instructor said to me once '''Old your stinger like you old your beer'', after that comment learning pipe welding became so much easier.

That pipe reminds me 25 years back when i was still welding. I had 6""heavy hall that i welded for 12:00hrs.I had x-rays between the layers and pre-heating on each. That was for me a every tirering job as i was new without experience. But guys what you are doing i appreciate very much. Keep up the good work.

My brother told me to check you out in 2017 and I just hired on with my first boiler company and could do a little fitting and mig welding, I could barely get a tack with a stick rod and I took what he shows in his videos and applied it in the field and at home and I now have 2 6G heavy walls, tig root and hot and stick all the way out, under my belt and one 6G schedule 40 tig all the way out, and 2 plate tests vertical and overhead stick all the way out. Thankful for people like Jodi😎 I have a YouTube channel also if you wanna see some of the shenanigans you’ll get into🤙🏼

A lot of Boilermakers would coathanger their rod and go from 6 to 12 in one rod, and maintain rod position throughout the test.

Thanks for going a bit into detail, about body positioning and foot shuffles, no one in school ever spoke about this very important topics.

A tip I got a few years back, if you need to use pliers or clamps as a prop or any time they need to be close to the weld joint.. slap a coat of spray paint on them it helps keep the spatter from sticking to them espacially on the joints and threads.

So I put a 90 degree bend in my rod right at the stinger. Then bend it into a big "U" shape, taking up the last quarter of the rod. Not gonna use it in a test anyway. Learned it from an old school pipe welder and it's super crazy how easy it makes it to roll up the pipe while keeping the correct angle.

Some WPS will only let you weld in the field with the hand you test with, at Hobart they suggested learning to weld one side right and one side left to certify both of your hands. Small details like this can trickle down as to who gets hired. When I started in a factory people would pick fun at me for bending my rod. I would just smile knowing that they had always been flatlanders and never welded small diameter pipe!
