Yes, you can! But you may need to reset iMessage after installing your eSIM by following the steps below:

1. Go to Settings on your device
2. Go to Messages
3. Toggle iMessage OFF
4. Toggle iMessage back to ON
5. Tap on Send & Receive
6. Uncheck your number and make sure your email address is checked. This way, you’ll be able to send and receive iMessages with only a data connection.

I have wifi roaming setup for my home phone number and unlike the video I found I needed to leave it enabled for iMessage to register. Apple support indicates that iMessage needs a mobile number that is SMS capable to register.

If I understand correctly. People need to use your email to text you? Using your primary number will not work using Airalo. So I go to a foreign country and follow the instructions, a person who wants to text me must use my email address only. Thanks for your help. My biggest issue is receiving a bank access code.

What happens if you leave your phone number and all the email addresses checked on?

I was wondering about this because I wanted to continue using iMessage with my USA cell number and not my email address. I am getting the impression this is not possible because the Airalo eSIMs are data only and the whole cell phone number thing seems to only work if you have an active cellular plan with a carrier. What I have decided to do is keep my (really cheap) USA cellular carrier plan eSIM enabled on my phone that is linked to my phone number, this has allowed me to continue texting with my phone number through iMessage, however the battery is constantly draining on my phone because the USA eSIM is constantly hunting for USA towers while I am traveling outside of the USA. If I turn the USA eSIM off then I cannot use iMessage with my cell phone number. The only other thing I can think to try is to enable international data pass on my USA carrier plan so that the system lets my phone ping off international towers, maybe this will then allow my phone to stop hunting for USA towers all the time which keeps draining the battery? The ONLY problem with this is that I don't want to be charged by my USA carrier plan for each day that the phone pulls data from international towers as I had this happen in the past, even when I had the settings switched to pull data off the travel SIM, my carrier charged me for daily international data use. I will probably post this on my USA carriers forum website, but it's a problem (unrelated to Airalo) that I am trying to figure out. Also, initially I tried to load my USA phone number into the Airalo eSIM settings because it allowed me to do so, but then iMessage still will not work that way, I am not sure why but I suspect it's because the Airalo eSIMs are for data only and not an actual carrier cellular plan. Anyone have any experience or insite on this?

So would I need to know someone's email to send them a message? I'm traveling with 8 people and we would like to use iMessage but if everyone is using airalo and doing the same settings. I guess I would need to add their email to their contact
