"We Can't Hit Him." - Greyhound (2020) #shorts #greyhound #ship #movie #movieinsight #warships

Greyhound is a 2020 American war film directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay. The film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester, and also stars Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue.

The film follows a commander in the US Navy on his assignment commanding a multi-national escort destroyer group of four defending an Allied convoy of thirty-seven merchant and troop ships. They come under attack by German U-boats in early 1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic, only a few months after the United States officially entered World War II.

Once the sub surfaced, he was finished. The destroyers had superior speed, maneuverability, and firepower.

Gotta give props to the Germans for their seamanship and balls of steel to go toe to toe against destroyers

i slept on a retired battle ship the U.S.S little rock in buffalo NY with my scout pack. my dad woke us up early one morning out of the bunks that the soldiers would have been sleeping in to follow the smell of coffee, my old man must really like coffee because the bunks were below deck and we ended up scaling 3 flights of stairs. need less to say he found his coffee, one of the other scout dads had his son with him, he brewed the pot in the radio control room, because he was well versed in radio communications we got to use the ships antenna to talk to people around the world. you don't notice how massive and intimidating a battle ship is until you see one in person, especially from within the belly of the beast. just a great experience over all. if you end up in Buffalo NY stop by the U.S.S. little rock.

The only thing I didn't care for is the perfectly crisp radio transmissions.

Gotta give respect to the German crew, they were bold enough charge them in order to go under their gun sights and keep both destroyers next to each other so Greyhound couldn’t shoot without hitting Dicky.

“He slipped under our guns, sir! We can’t hit him!”

Then why are you wasting ammo?

This was a very good movie. Tom Hank’s performance was touching and human.

Forest Gump has sure fought in a lot of wars, never changes character.

Gotta give it to the sub crew to be between a corvette and destroyer and still be on their guns fighting to survive.

Boy, that Tom Hanks is GREAT! Hes a slow shrimp boat captain, a romantic widower chasing Meg Ryan, a heroic ships captain taken by pirates, and now a World War 2 submarine captain.

IRL combat in this kind of weather would have been impossible. Convoy escorts loved storms because UBoats couldn’t operate effectively in them. Submarines have a bad habit of accidentally surfacing if they’re running at periscope depth in heavy weather. If they did surface without warning it could damage the sub and it would certainly reveal their position. Not to mention in this weather it would have been hell inside the sub getting rolled around.

In The Cruel Sea Monsarrat talks about how despite being sea sick the convoy escorts welcomed storms. It was the calm summer nights they feared. Especially dawn. Submarines could get inside the convoys then and fire off everything before they could do anything. The convoy would scatter and the stragglers would be picked off. Losing 10-15 ships during a single morning.

Greyhound is pure fantasy. In 6 years of war Monsarrat only had two confirmed kills and was on one ship that sunk. The war in the Atlantic was not easy.

The twist at the end of this movie when it’s revealed that Tom Hanks is a Nazi double agent was masterfully executed

A perfect example of the coordination of HK(hunter killer) units. Specialized small battle groups specifically tasked to locate and destroy the U-boats

Awesome movie, great clip.
I have one question - why do we need a subtitle play by play on every video now? Really annoying, I can hear.
